There's an Army research facility near me and I sometimes see soldiers in fatigues at the nearby mall. When I see them I always say “beat Navy!” and they laugh.

The protocol for the wearing of uniforms off post was rather strict when I was in the Army... one could stop for “essentials” like fuel or minimal food necessities at civilian facilities, but that was about it, and don’t get caught shopping out of uniform on the way home because you mistakenly left your cap in your vehicle, or your blouse is off laying on the seat of your vehicle and you are caught standing in line (without it on) at an ATM.
