Trump's Supreme Court frontrunners: A mother of seven who adopted two children from Haiti and belongs to a Christian sect that inspired The Handmaid's Tale - and a Cuban American whose father was stopped from becoming a lawyer by Castro

President Donald Trump's announced Saturday night that the Supreme Court nominee he plans to announce next week to fill the vacancy left by Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be a woman, spotlighting two conservative women as his potential pick.

During a campaign rally in North Carolina, Trump declared 'I will be putting forth a nominee this week, it will be a woman', later adding his pick would be a 'very talented, very brilliant woman' because 'I like women more than I like men'.

As he left the White House for the rally, the president identified two women as front runners: Amy Coney Barrett, 48, of the Chicago-based 7th Circuit and Barbara Lagoa, 52, of the Atlanta-based 11th Circuit as possible nominees.

Better choice: Nominate Biden. He will have to go through confirmation hearings and be exposed for all the shit he’s done in his life.

Interesting document. A SCOTUS shouldn’t be confirmed knowing right off the bat that frequent recusal, and 4-4 decisions are probable, The more I hear about her, the more hinky I feel.

“I would rather have ... a man that don’t base thinks on ‘feelings’.”

Agree. Women on SCOTUS have ended up badly for conservatives, and I’d prefer a man. Considering the critical timing with the election looming, though, it seems that a conservative minority woman would be confirmed more easily than a man.

Either one would be a great choice.

Why include that second link? She isn’t mentioned in it at all.

See comment #41 on Lagoa. Several elements of her background indicate a likely propensity towards a strong defense of our rights as stated in the Second Amendment including our rights regarding modern sporting rifles (AR-15s, etc.). She’s Cuban-American, and Governor Ron DeSantis appointed her to the Florida Supreme Court. We might see more detailed information on that soon.

Besides being more likely to be accomplished, a Lagoa appointment would be the wisest choice by far in regards to the 2020 election (Latin-American vote). That would make yet another Supreme Court appointment possible for President Trump, bringing a total of Second-Amendment-friendly justices to 5 (Thomas, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh being the three proven justices in place for Second Amendment rights).

On Barrett, she wrote a dissent in favor of felons possessing firearms, in cases where courts might decide that individual felons aren’t dangerous. But some of the language in her arguments in the same document might allow for bans against categories of firearms (for example, a ban against modern sporting rifles (AKA “assault weapons”).

Of related note (in re. the aforementioned dissent), many have been misled to believe that Eugene Volokh is of the opinion that an assault weapons ban would be unconstitutional, but that is not correct.

Expert On Gun Regulation Says “Assault Weapons” Bans Are Useless

“Although Volokh says that assault weapons bans would be useless, he also says that they would likely be constitutional, since ‘such bans leave law-abiding citizens with ample access to other guns that are equally effective, and therefore don’t substantially burden the constitutional right’ to keep and bear arms.”

Also will not go over well with Dem Catholics right before the election if all they attack her on is being a Catholic

Never underestimate a religious democrat's ability to compartmentalize and live in denial.

The anti-Catholic sentiment on this thread is deeply amusing given the reality that the most recent judicial heroes of the right (Scalia, Thomas, and Alito) have all been extremely devout Catholics. Of course, Sotomayor and Roberts identify as Catholic too, but the point is that there is no reason to freak out over Catholicism, especially if the person being considered takes it seriously. Many of those can’t wait until the current Pope is gone.

Oh, and both Barrett and Lagoa are Catholic, so...

Anyway, Barrett is the significantly better choice. I will be very disappointed if Lagoa is selected.

Roberts is horrid! But some men on SCOTUS have been, and are, good. Has ANY female SCOTUS been good when it comes to conservatism? Maybe, but I can’t think of any.

"...Barrett oddly said she must recuse herself from decisions where a constitutional ruling would go against dictates from Rome (think Francis and illegal immigration)..."

Yes. Here's the abstract and link for that paper.

Actually, she’s probably a pretty good pick in that case, if that’s what the media says about her.

Side Bar, Info: POTUS, Donald J. Trump has gone full speed in hosting Political Campaign Rallies. This week Trump will hold campaign events in Ohio (2), Pennsylvania (2), Florida (1). He has been averaging about 35,000 people attending per event. His biggie this week IMHO, is Jacksonville. Florida!!! It should be a “Blockbuster” with at least 50,000 people attending.

Why? Jacksonville is the booming city in North Florida. It sits at the Junction of Interstate Highways “I-10 & I-95”. It can be reached from northwest Florida in a three hours drive, it can be reached from Tampa, Orlando & Daytona, in a three to four hour drive drivng on I-4 Interstate Highway, the great state of Georgia, Atlanta can reach Jacksonville in a three to four hour drive!!!

This massive Rally will have some 35,000-50,000 people, if not more, there. Be one of them....BE THERE!!! Support and Cheer on our great POTUS, Donald J. Trump!!!

Go, Trump, Go, Pence, Go, GOP!!!

Yes. See this brief against an AR-15 ban. Britt Grant was Solicitor General of Georgia at the time and one of the filers of the brief.

Alito, Thomas and Scalia are conservative Catholics. The Catholic Church is in the middle of a civil war - just like this country
