Sen. Ted Cruz: After Ginsburg -- 3 reasons why Senate must confirm her successor before Election Day
Fox News ^ | 9/20/2020 | Sen. Ted Cruz

Posted on 09/20/2020 8:27:38 AM PDT by McGruff

On Friday, our nation lost a historic Supreme Court Justice: Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She was a brilliant justice, a legendary advocate, a careful lawyer, and, as only the second woman to ever serve on the Supreme Court, a trailblazer. She led an extraordinary life that shaped the lives of others and she leaves behind her an extraordinary legacy.

Much like the news in 2016 of the great Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s passing during an election year, Friday’s news was instantaneously followed by the question of when to fill the vacancy that now stands on the Court.

Here’s why President Trump must nominate a successor next week and why the Senate must confirm that successor before Election Day:

First, this nomination is why the American people elected Donald Trump as president and this confirmation is why the American people voted for a Republican majority in the U.S. Senate.

Second, twenty-nine times in our nation’s history we’ve seen a Supreme Court vacancy in an election year or before an inauguration and in every instance, the president proceeded with a nomination.

And finally, as we approach what is likely to be a contested election that hangs in the balance of the Supreme Court, our nation is at risk of a constitutional crisis without nine justices on the bench.

I don’t think there will be a vote before November 3, 2020 because of Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and some other Republican senator who don’t want one. But Mitch McConnell should still hold hearings on the nominee just so the public can see the Demococrats embarrass themselves on camera.

Plenty of time, but I'll take confirmation vote on November 4th.
Contested ballots will take a week or two to get to the Supreme Court anyways.

Proceed with the vote before the election.

Only 2 GOP Senators have said they will not vote
before the election. Where are you getting your numbers?

This is why I respect Cruz - he could have been just as butt-hurt as Romney after a bruising, nasty primary against Trump. But Cruz puts conservative principles over his personal emotions, unlike so many of the never-Trump drama queens. That’s what I care about - I don’t care whose feelings get hurt, I have zero respect for guys like Kasich or George Will who throw away everything they’ve ever said because Trump hurt their feelings. Cruz will get my vote when his time comes.

With or without Murkowski and Collins, we still have enough votes. We don't really need them.

What sick pablum politicians spout.
RBG was a sick, evil, baby killing harridan and people across the board praise her.

Will any politician speak truth to the lies?
Cruz isn't doing it!

I think another important reason is that if Trump gets his pick it won’t be an issue during the election. Biden has no heat behind him but he might whip up some support with liberals afraid of losing the Supreme Court. If they already “lost it” they would just be too depressed to go vote. Sure it’s more political /selfish reason but it’s still a good reason for Trump and republicans to push it forward.

I can just imagine how shrill the naysayers will become as it becomes
increasingly clearer that a SC pick can be installed before the election.

I agree. Hold the nomination hearings before then, but then hold the vote right on November 4th.
