Trump to Make Supreme Court Nomination Friday or Saturday. President has five women under consideration to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

President Trump said he would nominate a Supreme Court pick on Friday or Saturday and has five women under consideration to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, as Senate Republicans lined up behind him and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), rejecting Democrats’ calls to let the winner of the presidential election make the pick.

Mr. Trump maintained that the replacement of Justice Ginsburg, who died Friday of metastatic pancreatic cancer at the age of 87, should happen swiftly. “We won the election and elections have consequences,” he said Monday morning on Fox News. “We have plenty of time.”

The president’s list has been narrowed to two leading candidates, according to people familiar with the matter: federal appellate judges Amy Coney Barrett of the Seventh Circuit, in Chicago, and Barbara Lagoa of the 11th Circuit, in Atlanta.

The president said he has three other people to choose from, though declined to name them. He said he was looking for someone who is young and could serve on the court for a long time. “We’re looking for a good person.”

Judge Barrett, 48 years old, was confirmed to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in October 2017 in a 55-43 vote. She is popular among social conservatives and was a finalist for the post in 2018 when Mr. Trump chose Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Judge Lagoa, 52, previously served as the first Hispanic woman on Florida’s high court.

More than 20 Senate Republicans said over the weekend that they back moving immediately to fill the vacancy, and many are expected to follow suit as the week gets under way. Two Republican senators—Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska—broke ranks this weekend, saying they oppose action on a nomination before the presidential election.

Who says Trump is spiking the ball?

He has a very aggressive campaign rally schedule because the ELECTION is just six weeks away!

POTUS said this morning that out of respect for the Justice it will be announced Friday or Saturday.
He has decided.
He wants the left to continue to toss names around, start their schmear and then demoralize them when he announces.
Some nominees can’t be schmeared.
Plus, they will need to deal with the “bunker buster” that may (or may not) be deployed this week.

Not really.

It is hard for many Freepers to process how half a Republican from an otherwise Blue State is better than none.

I doubt that McConnell would have said anything about a vote unless he already talked to everyone and knew he had the votes.

Agree, the only outlier would be Romney, the guy with a binder of women who is from a religious conservative state. He is boxed in and needs to support this candidate, unless he only wants one term and a horrific anti-woman, anti-religious legacy.

Half Republicans lose elections, Collins will most likely lose.

“And you’d think the top three or four candidates would have been fully vetted long ago. Everybody knew this day was coming.”

Yup - and even if there weren’t a very ill Justice who is going to check out soon, the list of vetted possibilities should be at hand as an ongoing thing. There should be at least one person who has that in their WH job description, there’s no excuse for getting caught flat footed on something this big.

Exactly. About a year ago RBG got really sick and there were long threads here and articles all over the media about her passing. Why would Trump need even more time to decide who his nominee is?

Collins has been in the Senate since 1997—and that seat could easily have otherwise been blue all along.

Again, you are misapplying Red State principles to a Blue State.

And yes, she could well lose this time around.

It would be bad optics for Trump to nominate somebody even before RBG has had her funeral.

I think a week is adequate time to make a nomination. Friday will be the one week since RGB's death but I'm betting on a Saturday morning event at the WH - which would have a large audience.

Another reason to get the ball rolling ASAP instead of delaying.

Throwing Obama’s words back at them! Love it!

“My gut feeling is that neither Barrett nor Lagoa is the right choice.”

Why is that? Not bagging on your opinion. I’m just curious as to why you think that.

“About a year ago RBG got really sick”

She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in Obama’s 2nd year. That type of cancer is known for not having good outcomes.
