Why Amy Coney Barrett is hands-down best pick to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg
New York Post ^ | September 21, 2020 | Sohrab Ahmari

Picture a female jurist who has consistently defied social expectations imposed on women and whose legal thinking is closely bound up with her faith. No, I’m not talking about Amy Coney Barrett, reported to top President Trump’s list of candidates to fill the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat. I’m talking about Ginsburg herself.

Ginsburg believed fervently that conventional expectations shouldn’t hinder women as they seek their full, fair share of public life. Nor was she shy about how her Jewish faith shaped her judicial mind. In an essay for the American Jewish Committee published in 1993, she wrote: “Laws as protectors of the oppressed, the poor, the loner, is evident in the work of my Jewish predecessors. . . . The biblical command ‘Justice, justice shalt thou pursue’ is a strand that ties them together.”

By those criteria, Barrett would make a most worthy successor to RBG. In nominating the 48-year-old Louisianian, the president would present the nation with an inspiring vision of what it means to be an American woman in 2020 — one that could by turns surprise and captivate the suburban women Trump is keen to court while also delivering for the GOP base.

Make sure she didn’t write “boof” in anyone’s high school yearbook.

And I hope we have a tight schedule of hearings and proceed to a vote.

I hope we don’t have a Kavanaugh redo, in which we have hearings, Cory Booker plays the part of Spartacus, we see multiple audience interruptions, but then, are compelled to delay as we wait for the sexual misbehavior allegations to be investigated.

I wish Lindsey Graham would pre-emptively announce, that any scandalous information needs to be disclosed up front, and any scandals introduced after the hearings are over, as happened with Christine Ford, will simply not be permitted to change the schedule of proceedings.

Understand this President Trump was in Ohio, he was not supposed to be back there so soon.

How does Amy help him politically. What good is it if she is nominated and fails to get in.

Barbara Logoa will help him politically and provide a solid conservative in the court.

Why will she help him politically? Logoa was never elected in Florida at any level. At tops 5% of Floridians know who she is. You think Florida is going to vote for Trump because he nominates someone they've never heard of.

Also, even if Trump nominated someone moderate to left leaning like her, the Democrats will still act like he nominated Hitler.

“the left is going to burn everything down no matter whom we pick, so we might as well get the right person on the court.” One senior Hill staffer was even blunter: “This late in the game, I’m not interested in today’s version of [George H.W. Bush chief of staff John] Sununu vouching for today’s version of [Justice David] Souter” — i.e., social conservatives don’t want to gamble on a candidate without a clear record on life and religious-liberty questions, only to have the justice with a lifetime appointment turn out to be a liberal squish.

Very hard to disagree with any of this. We've been burned so many time before... including by the perfidious John Roberts. And the jury's still out on Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. It's been a fool's errand trying to sneak "stealth conservatives" and "crypto-originalists" onto the court and hoping for the best... all in a pathetic attempt to placate the media and the Democrats and the Susan Collinses of the world. Forget it. Get someone we can trust from the start and go all in.

Not so sure about that - she gets a lot of support from Dems.

Senate confirmations previously:

Lagoa confirmed 80-15
Barrett confirmed 55-43
Britt Grant confirmed 52-46

Why do you think Amy wouldn’t help Trump politically?

Why do you have concerns that she would be nominated but not confirmed? If you doubt that she would be confirmed, then do you also have doubts that Barbara Logoa would get confirmed?

With any nominee, the Democrats will unanimously oppose them. So are you concerned that more Republicans would jump ship with Amy Barrett than Barbara Logoa?

I don’t care if it’s a woman or not, but if they turn into
a Sandra Day O’Connor or Ruth Ginzberg, I’m not going to be
a happy camper at all.

I won’t be happy if they turn into a John Roberts either.

Souter there was no track record. I'm not sure what happened with John Roberts. He had a solid track record. He still follows that on a lot of decisions, but on the important one he seems inexplicable.

Kavanaugh and Gorsuch were disciples of Anthony Kennedy, so we pretty much know they will be moderate to drifting left, but occasionally decide the right way.

Logoa could possibly get confirmed, because Democrats know she’s usually on their side.

I like your idea about Graham setting the rules for Dems to disclose anything detrimental before the hearings start. He should give them a very limited amount of time to come forward, once the President announces the nominee. In the past, they’ve been able to continually delay for bull$hit, and that shouldn’t be allowed at all. Barrett just went through confirmation in 2017, so realistically, there shouldn’t be a problem, but the Dems will try any trick in the book to hold up the process. They do it every time a Republican President nominates someone for a court seat. The Democrats held up Kavanuagh’s nomination to the Circuit Court for almost 3 freaking years.

Remember all of the disruptions while the vote was underway in the Kavanagh nomination? It will be even worse, so maybe the gallery should be closed beforehand.
