Senate GOP plans vote on Trump’s court pick before election (Oct 29)

Votes in hand, Senate Republicans are charging ahead with plans to confirm President Donald Trump’s pick to fill the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s Supreme Court seat before the Nov. 3 election, launching a divisive fight over Democratic objections before a nominee is even announced.

Trump said Tuesday he will name his choice Saturday, confident of support. Democrats say it’s too close to the election, and the winner of the presidency should name the new justice. But under GOP planning, the Senate could vote Oct. 29.

“I guess we have all the votes we’re going to need,” Trump told WJBX FOX 2 in Detroit. “I think it’s going to happen.”

Sorry, but Roberts will in no way give the election to trump, it will be 4-4 no matter what. The only so called issue will be to keep counting ballots until the dems win, same as 2000, sc stopped the counting.

[Why are you obsessed with her father-in-law? What about your take on her record as a justice with the FL Supreme Court? ]

I think Trump is leaning towards Barrett. I like Lagoa and merely cited one reason he may be looking elsewhere. Lagoa’s trajectory from law-and-order prosecutor to Federal appeals court judge is one I like. The Hispanic and independent* voter angle (inoculating Trump against the allegation that he’s anti-Hispanic) is a good one. But Trump is who he is. And he’s the one who spent $60m of his own money winning the presidency.

* There are white guilt independent voters who can’t feel comfortable with voting for Trump unless they are confident he isn’t the raging Nazi the media keeps saying he is. Lagoa would be the antidote to the media’s slurs against Trump. Probably no one heard he appointed her to the appeals court. No one will miss the news that he’s appointed her to the Supreme Court.

Good. The Democrats had plenty of chances to question her when she had her last confirmation hearing. All they'd do is try to drag everything out anyway...stall as long as they could. If no hearings though, why wait until Oct. 29th for the vote? It needs to be done before that.

Swearing in on the evening of Nov 2 on CSPAN, then go to Dixville Notch to watch the first votes be cast

Saturday, 26th. Picked...vote on Oct 29th? Why wait a month???

I agree. Although perhaps by dragging this out and keeping the Senate in session, it prevents certain Democrats from campaigning at home.

Otherwise, I'd rather have it wrapped up within 16 days of the nomination because you KNOW Democrats will begin their stalling tactics, just as they did with Kavanaugh. Setting up the vote a week before the election just BEGS the Dems to find some last-minute issue that demands additional hearings.

They should aim the vote for October 15th and dare them to stretch out the hearings for three weeks.

Good faith advise and consent is legitimate. But there is no way the Dems get to have another Kavanaugh circus jerk. A month is plenty of time. They can even confirm after the election, so long as they have a full nine on deck on time for any dispute.

The Senate confirmed James Byrnes in 1941 on the same day that President Franklin Roosevelt nominated him. Four years later, Roosevelt’s nomination of Harold Burton took one day for confirmation.

Exactly. I don’t understand why it’s so late. It gives Dems time to come up with smear campaign on President pick.

Not sure I agree. If left at 4-4, it will get punted back to original deciding Judge, court order which Dems will sure to have the right Judge in their corner to rule in their favor.

Promising is worthless - especially since Schumer and a couple RINOs will delay as much as they can - Mitch is going to work his tail off to get it done - throwing feces at him isn’t helpful.

They are waiting till the last minute? As usual the pubbies don’t understand what dirty tricks the RATS can pull. They need to have at least a 2 week cushion.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Doesn’t the SC reconvene sometime in Oct too? They should be trying to get the nominee approved in time to participate. Also, I think they need a week or two to get settled in before they can participate.

Confirmation, if it happens, will be well after election day to preserve the 4-4 split to hear election challenges. Schumer can easily cause that to happen as he has invoked the “two hour rule”. The republicans want to get rid of Trump as badly as do the democrats.

Everyone’s talking about a “4-4” court with the assumption that Roberts will certainly screw us. That’s not a foregone conclusion, folks!

How come nobody’s talking about a 5-3 court?

There is hearings, preparation etc. It can’t be done immediately. This is actually pretty darn speedy in recent terms.
