I’m old. 75. I remember a time when the Democrat party was at least reasonable and open to compromise and negotiation. They have become insane and irrational.
This may be too big a question for this forum — but...
Why? What happened to drive them all around the bend?
This is a serious question. I don’t — can’t — understand it.
But I believe all things are understandable at some level, and the insanity of half the public, it seems, makes no rational sense to me. They weren’t always this intractable and destructive.

The children are the cultural Marxists’ future. Have been for many decades.
Our children have been specifically targeted a century by our pubic schools, news, media, churches and now social media.
We had John Dewey’s early 1900’s Progressive (Marxist) anti-home schooling influence, followed by The Frankfurt School’s mid-1900’s social Marxist plan for children, then Hollywood’s 1950’s communist influences, then NEA’s No God push in our schools, then their infiltration of the Democrat party.
Then, the 1960’s CPUSA push of college youts for war protests, drug use and wanton fornication, then the 1980’s sitcoms ridiculing parents, then the 1990’s queer push, then the 2000’s self-esteem facade.
Now MSM, SJW groups and social media are feeding their ignorance and arrogance.
I think many young people have lived in relative luxury and their whole lives they have been taught nihilism and an angry, entitlement mentality. Also, the Democrats encourage immigrants of the sort who want to bring the tribalism, corruption, authoritarianism and hate from the old country to America, rather than leaving the old ways behind.

That depends upon how you define always. In the late 70s I became conciously aware that they WERE in fact utterly intractable and damning of ANYONE WHO didn’t precisely agree with them.
I don't have any definitive answers, but from what I've observed amongst my own family members (6 sibs), all Baby Boomers, it is because people are increasingly discovering that you don't have to argue with your political opponents (i.e., present cogent arguments backed up by facts) if you instead demonize them.

There has been a convergence of many factors, but I think in short, the abandonment of, and rebellion against traditional Judeo-Christian morality has left a vacuum filled by moral relativism. The inevitable result of this is that each person becomes a "god," unto themselves.
Evaluating the ethics or moral virtue of a situation, person or decision becomes much easier when the standard by which one judges is, "because I said so." Moral relativism is intellectual laziness, and without the strictures of moral absolutes, society will, like raging floodwaters, seek the path of least resistance, and destroy much of what is in its path.
