I don’t blame them. They were looking for a high school debate. Problem is - in a high school debate, the moderator is generally neutral. And infractions are penalized - on both sides. Biden was not only not penalized - he was aided by Wallace. To get his message out, Trump had to talk over both Wallace and Biden. So he did. The mauling Biden received obviously had the liberal commentariat aghast. Which is about as generous an endorsement of Trump’s tactics as anyone could have wished for.

Problem is - in a high school debate, the moderator is generally neutral.

Competitive debate, at either the high school or college level, has judges, not moderators. And the judges don't generally say anything; they have a written ballot that they mark. (Debaters get the ballots in an envelope at the end of the tournament.) Debaters ask questions directly of the other team at certain points. They generally don't say anything to the judge during the debate, nor does the judge say anything to them.
