Alexander has headed the foundation for the last two years and comes to the position with a background in African American studies and poetry. While at a previous position at the Ford Foundation she helped create an art initiative to address the problem of mass incarceration, and she recited a poem she’d written titled “Praise Song for the Day” at Barack Obama’s 2009 presidential inauguration.
