Stephen Reed: GOP needs a new Reagan Coalition
gazettemail ^ | 10/09/2020 | Stephen Reed

Ronald Reagan remains the Gold Standard among American presidents for conservatism. Reagan was successful in putting an amiable face on a political philosophy sometimes seen as tough, at least on communists and fans of big-government programs.

After an unsuccessful trial run for the GOP nomination for president in 1976, Reagan kicked in the door in 1980. The former two-term California governor not only won the Republican nomination for president but defeated President Jimmy Carter, sending Reagan to the White House.

The coalition Reagan put together in 1980 grew by 1984, allowing him to become a two-term president. Moreover, enough of that Reagan Coalition remained intact, allowing his vice president, George H.W. Bush, to win a term as president in 1988.

GW Bush blew up Reaganism and it’s best we embrace Trumpism.

Did Jeb Bush write this under a pseudonym?

Reagan was my man - for the 80s

For the 2020s, it’s TRUMP! (and if Reagan were alive he’d agree)

It’s a between-the-lines way of saying “we don’t need Trump”.

Sorry, that was then, and this is now. The sad fact of the matter is that there are no longer enough Reagan Coalition-type Conservatives left anymore to win elections.

Today they all come down to a contest between the Democrat Socialists and Trump Populism.

What the RINOS want is another Ford/Rockefeller elitist cabal. We HAVE a “Reagan” coalition right now with Trump. The RINOs can pound sand.

putting an amiable face on a political philosophy

Yeah, like that helped. Reagan was described in the press at the time on 5 continents as Darth Vader. That's Communism for you.

On Reagan in retrospect, the Democrats . . . have been every bit as vicious and petty about him as they were during his life on earth.

The point is to win the election and squash America's enemies, foreign and domestic. I don't hire a general or Commander-in-Chief for his table manners. Reagan was good at winning, and so is Trump.

I don’t see anyone on the GOP carrying 49 states like Reagan did given the state of things. You gotta worry about the now and Trump is the man right now. The GOP nomed two about as conventional republicans in McCain and Mitt and it didn’t work. Trump won states GOP hadn’t won in a very long time.

Feels like this is just Never Trumper handwringing.

Trump BUILT the new coalition. Pro American, pro worker, pro life. Anti Washington. It’s why he won all the red and purple states last time, including Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania of which other republicans could not get.

Interesting indeed.

And what does the author propose should be done about the GOPe-progressive Democrat coalition that saw GOP Senators campaigning for progressive Democrat Doug Jones in Alabama, a GOP Senator voting to remove a GOP POTUS based on a impeachment hoax, a GOP House ignoring FBI lying to Congress on Spygate, etc., etc.

Yup. The old globalist free-trade Chicago School of Economics conservatism is deader than a doornail. Three decades of pissed-off people in the Rust Belt killed it.

*************

The GOP will never accept Trumpism. Never, ever.

Trump was on Rush today and expressed great frustration with the GOP. I hope he launches a new party. We are in desperate need of one.

People talk about the GOPe but its really the larger party that enables the kind of examples you cited. As an example, the GOP controlled congress could (and should) have removed Paul Ryan but they allowed him to effectively retire in place where he could thwart the president and his agenda. We need a new party.

The only thing positive that could come as a result of Trump loosing this election is that the GOP would be burnt to the ground. Then perhaps a real Constitutionally Conservative party would emerge from the ashes.

You’re right and I’m there. Let the GOP try and resuscitate the Reagan years.

Which wouldn't matter because the Dems would quickly take steps to see to it that they never lose another election again. (universal mail ballots, statehood for Guam and DC, etc.)
