Cuomo unveils Mother Cabrini statue to mark Columbus Day

Gov. Andrew Cuomo unveiled a statue honoring Mother Frances Cabrini in Battery Park City Monday to mark Columbus Day.

The Columbus Day Parade went virtual this year thanks to the coronavirus pandemic and Cuomo served as the parade’s grand marshal.

Cuomo announced the state would commission the Mother Cabrini statue after First Lady Chirlane McCray left Mother Cabrini out of the first group of statues being constructed as part of the"She Built NYC" initiative despite Cabrini having the highest number of public nominations.

Cabrini was an Italian American Catholic nun who helped Italian American immigrants living in the United States.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and McCray left for Massachusetts on Sunday and did not attend Monday’s statue ceremony.

The mayor’s Press Secretary Bill Neidhardt said de Blasio sent the city’s School Construction Authority President Lorraine Grillo to attend the ceremony in his place but did not comment on how the mayor felt about the statue going up.

De Blasio got into a heated exchange with actor Chazz Palminteri last year, who called McCray racist for not including Cabrini on the list.

Cuomo committed $750,000 for the project, appointing a commission of 19 members, including Angelo Vivolo of the Columbus Heritage Coalition and Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of the Brooklyn Diocese, that oversaw the design, location and installation of the statue.

“Last year on this very day, we announced that we would build a statue to Mother Cabrini, there was no doubt that she deserved it that, Mother Cabrini had not received the proper recognition that she deserved and that New Yorkers wanted to memorialize her and we did it in one year,” Cuomo said Monday in Battery Park City.

“This Columbus Day, the celebration of Mother Cabrini is even more appropriate than when we announced it last year,” he said. “Today, the lesson of Mother Cabrini is even more vital because of the difficulties that we are facing. We all know that these are challenging times.”

I think Chazz Palminteri is being disingenuous. He knows Chirlane McCray didn't pick Mother Cabrini because she was Catholic, not because she's Italian. Charlane McCray would only be too happy to put up a statue of Sacco & Vanzetti.

Frances Cabrini founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The modern left would relentlessly sue her to make sure their employees had health plans that covered abortion.
