Iowa voters say they’re voting for Trump because of his ‘American standard of living’
The Daily Iowan ^ | Oct 15, 2020 | Julia Shanahan, Politics Editor

Several thousand Iowans filled a tarmac at the Des Moines International airport Wednesday night to greet President Trump, and many said they plan to vote for Trump on Nov. 3, despite his rhetoric many consider to be racist. Many people The Daily Iowan spoke to said that while they don’t particularly like the language Trump uses, they said they appreciate his American values and patriotism and that he’s not always politically correct.

Trump’s language often borders racism, like when he generalizes Mexican migrants coming over the border as criminals and rapists, and like when he said Black Lives Matter “is bad for Black people. It’s bad for everybody.”

Trump sometimes uses more coded language, like when he says he’s going to stop Democrats from destroying the suburbs by building low-income housing projects and saying he’s going to make sure schools and workplaces don’t facilitate anti-American education — both points that received a loud applause on Wednesday.

“He doesn’t play politics,” said Sherri King, 67, a retired nurse. “The Democrats have done nothing but obstruct him. They spied on his campaign and then tried to impeach him for two and a half years.”

King, who voted for Trump in 2016, said he embodies an “American way of life” in a way that Joe Biden does not. She said she supports the wall on the U.S.-Mexico border Trump encouraged construction on in order to prevent illegal immigration. The border wall, which Trump claimed on Wednesday to now be 400 miles long, was a centerpiece of his 2016 campaign.

King said that when she was laid off from her job as a nurse in 2016, she did not qualify for health care under the Affordable Care Act because it was based off of her income from the previous year. She said Trump helped to repeal the ACA individual mandate, something she said was a big accomplishment.

The Supreme Court will hold oral arguments on the future of the ACA on Nov. 10, one week after Election Day. Amid a rushed confirmation process to fill former justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat, Democrats have stressed the importance of ensuring Americans can continue on with their government-provided health insurance.

Trump has voiced support for repealing the ACA, but does not currently have a health-care plan to replace it with.

James Steinberger, 57, voted for Trump in 2016 and is voting for him again because of his “American standard of living.” Steinberger pointed to Trump’s views on law and order, saying he strongly opposes some Democrats’ calls to defund the police.

Steinberger, a Waukee native, said he supports the idea of Black Lives Matter, but said he doesn’t like “identity politics,” saying that because he’s a white, male, conservative, he feels as though the media is generalizing that demographic of people as racist.

“I’m not a racist,” he said. “I believe there are bad Black people, that are bad white people — there are bad people of all kinds. I just want the good people to live a life they deserve and the bad people to go to jail. For me, it’s plain and simple.”

Some members of the Democratic Party have made calls to defund the police, but Biden has not endorsed this position. Despite Trump’s attacks on Biden, Biden has said he wants to give police departments the resources they need to implement meaningful reforms.

Steinberger acknowledged that some of Trump’s language around the Black Lives Matter movement and immigration policy can be perceived as racist, and he said he wishes Trump would soften his language. But, he said, it comes down to what actions a president takes while in office. “I think Trump goes a little too far with his rhetoric. I think he’d be better off being a little more sympathetic or trying to suit his words a little better,” Steinberger said. “But he’s the one out here, he’s the one out here going day to day trying to protect people — law and order and all that.”

Admira Ibradzic, 19, said she’ll be casting her first vote in a presidential election for Trump on Nov. 3. She said that she doesn’t like the way Trump talks about immigrants or women, but that no politician is perfect.

“I really don’t like the way Trump talks currently, if there’s one thing I could change about him is the way he says things,” she said. “But there’s a difference between action and words.”

She said her parents are immigrants from Bosnia and that her father owns a small business in Waterloo, and that she believes people who work for their money should be able to keep it rather than paying high taxes.

Ibradzic said she was a hardcore liberal when she was in high school, and then as she got older, she said she realized her views on taxes, gun control, and abortion align more with the Republican Party. “Just go vote … it is your right,” she said. “As a young person, it’s the first time for me voting and I’m excited to do it, and I feel like everyone should share that same excitement. You know, it’s a big thing.”

Yes, coded language. The code being American.

Even some Democrats have to be tired of the race card constantly being played

There’s “low income housing” and theirs “low income housing” - some of it is made to where it is totally demeaning to the people who have to live there. Low income housing doesn’t have to be made like that. It is designed to make people miserable / demoralized and unmotivated to make anything of themselves in life. That’s disgusting.

“despite his rhetoric many consider to be racist.” Now there is some objective reporting.

Although I am “Caucasian” by birth I have hundreds of relatives in Jamaica who if I may say so need never work on getting a tan and we share the last name and family history

Here in the states the only ones causing trouble are the low lifes, in many cases altered by cultural Gangsta model from where they live and a disdain in many cases for moving on and up.

A business partner in New Jersey who is black told me an axiom that goes like this

If you want to hide something from a black man put it in a book.

Why you ask?

Because culturally education is the white mans poison and reading a book is akin to suicide.

His words, not mine

And the thug life model to many seems logical and all of the music celebrates living in it

My heart is heavy for them but I cannot choose for them, each of us regardless of color makes choices for ourselves

As it was said in Star Wars...

Choose

But do so wisely

Amid a rushed confirmation process to fill former justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat

Justice Ginsburg herself was confirmed 42 days after her appointment and Justice O'Connor was confirmed 33 days after her appointment. There have been justices confirmed the very same day they were appointed.

Editorialized "news".

My only question is why is the media with their slanted twisted views still in business? I really look forward to the day they all go out of business so they can enjoy the benefits of socialist welfare.

I think there will be more and more reports about our American identity and the loss of it we see or fear

I also think people will more frequently attribute our loss of identity to the public school system

It’s the student newspaper for the UofI. This article is almost fair when compared to a lot of what they print.

A Muslim vote for Trump. Mark my words - anyone who owns a small business is rooting for Trump and haranguing everyone within his social circle to help him out by doing the same. Because the alternative will zero out the savings, sweat and tears these business owners have put into trying to realize their dreams. For them, it’s not about ideology - it’s about personal survival. Nobody talks about the small business vote. I think in this election, this demographic will roar.

High percentages of attendees at Trump rallies are not Republicans, and you can be pretty sure they’re not going to tell anyone they’re voting for Trump. But they will, because they are Americans. They go to the rallies to resolve their cognitive dissonance.

For the DI, the student paper of the most liberal conclave in Iowa, this is a very positive pro-Trump piece. Floyd of Rosedale was seen flying laps over the Pentacrest while reading this. Of course Floyd is also happily looking forward to another year in the Hog Heaven of the Hawkeye State. He’s been watching Iowa football practices And doesn’t much fear the death threats from the Hog hating heathens to the north.

At some point “coded language” like hating America and wanting it’s demise and having a hammer-and-sickle tattoo on your face might have ramifications among polite society.

Or am I being too optimistic?

What a biased horsecrap article. Saying BLM is bad for black people is “racist” or “borderline racist” is laughable BS.

Saying saving the suburbs is a “dog whistle” is similarly, garbage. President Trump pointed out EXPRESSLY that that is NOT what he was saying when he talked about saving the suburbs. He went out of his way to point out the large percent of minorities who currently live in suburbs. Their quality of life would be diminished too. Their property values would go down too if low income housing were suddenly forced on their neighborhoods.

“King said that when she was laid off from her job as a nurse in 2016”

Nurses getting laid off? Unable to find another nursing position? Sounds unlikely.
