“Service Merchandise. As a kid, thought it was a cool store.”
Me too! Loved seeing the boxes come down the ramp from the upper level. Bought my first calculator there in 1978.
I thought they were Brazilian Shoplifters.
“Even easier: Close retail area of the store, go internet only, use an Amazon Locker type pickup in the front of the store, with the lockers loaded from the back. No cash on site, no clerk to threaten over a counter.”
Walgreens has over 10,000 (ten thousand) stores. All of them except the ones in SF work fine.
Why should Walgreens jump though hoops so they can do business in one location in one city?
It makes more sense for Walgreens to shut down their SF stores and tell SF where to stick it.
If you ever listen to the Nerdrotic Youtube channel, his wife had a hair salon in SF for years. SF policies drove it out of business. What did they do? They moved someplace else and told SF where to stick it.
Eventually SF will look like Detroit if it keeps driving businesses away. Cities need more than IT companies to survive. Restaurants, drug stores, groceries matter too. And SF is driving them away.
Hire some bikers.
Do what the CVS stores in DC do. Put everything behind locked glass cases and if you need it the clerk gets it for you and carries it to the front checkout.
did you mean blacks? Good for you for speaking up.
Is that something like the Blue Chip Stamps? Where you submit your book of stamps and you get an item that you want that is shown on the store book and clerk goes and retrieves it and brings it to you.
Undocumented purchases. Move along. /sarc
I was there in October last year, and the Walgreens on Market street had the “homeless” come right in grab stuff, walk out and no one batted an eye.
It was like street monkeys stealing bananas from tourists in India. Part of the scenery.
“If shrinkage losses were no longer tax deductible, retailers might grow a pair.”
This is actually a hidden (and substantial) tax on people that don’t steal and/or who pay taxes. The government needs to make up the revenue somehow.
Amazon does take EBT - https://www.amazon.com/snap-ebt/b?node=19097785011#:~:text=Amazon%20has%20partnered%20with%20the%20U.S.%20government%20to,method%20on%20SNAP%20eligible%20items%20in%20select%20states.
Great....well at least the items won’t be shoplifted!
Service Merchandise had the best IT systems of any retailer that was around in the 90’s. They could have quite literally been Amazon. All that was needed was to add a webfront to the backend infrastructure they already had in place and it would be off to the races. They would have left Bezos in the dust.
They did not do this because their then-Chairman and CEO was an arrogant pr**k who refused to listen to advice from ANYBODY.
I remember Service Merchandise from the early 80’s.
A girl i once knew worked at one in Dedham, MA.
I really like their catalogs at the time.
They say Walgreens policy is to not get involved. They dont want anyone getting injured or getting sued, so the guys just keep coming in and taking whatever they want.
When thugs steal from they tend to blame the victim for the theft - and feel contempt for the victim. Clerk in these stores are more at risk than in stores where theft is not allowed. Same with newspapers and bias... the more unfair they are to conservatives the more likely they are to hate us. To do otherwise would mean they'd have to blame themselves... same with the thugs stealing from Walgreens. Walgrees needs to suck up they're guilt and quit placing stores in hellhole neighborhoods.
Drug store deserts coming.
Where is M. Obama. Or Kamala?
To the idiots chanting “End capitalism now!” I can only say that they’re going about it the right way.
When their 'great compassion' created new millions of these broken lives, the liberals 'walked away'. Now the 'homeless' in hellholes like California have free reign. Suburban Mom's are still pulled over and ticketed if they have a broken taillight on their cars - but the 'homeless' can commit almost any crime and walk away.
Liberal 'elites' (read white trash with money) attempt to impress others with their great compassion and even greater guilt... all to the detriment of a sane and livable society...
Walgreen's execs live miles away and are NOT affected by 'the homeless' attacking their children, pooping on their sidewalks or stealing from the stores they shop in...
If they were, they would stop this horror they inflict on 'other' Americans.
I subscribe to that channel. Sometimes, it feels as if he is visiting a third world country. I got a kick out of his recent video on different hood accents.
I wonder if Walgreen’s “donated” to the BLM?
