Yes you're right. Having worked in nursing homes I learned this is very much how the brain, in particular memory works in dementia patients.

It's much like an old movie projector that shows disjointed, out of sync scenes from a persons life in their mind but there is not cohesion or proper sequence to it all. And it only gets worse over time.
