Turkey Reportedly Used S-400 System Against US-Made F-16s, and Congress Wants Answers

Two lawmakers are requesting that the State Department provide details on Turkey's recent reported use of Russian-made S-400 surface-to-air missile system against F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets, as well as Russia’s ability to gather critical intelligence through it on U.S. and NATO allies.

Sens. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., and James Lankford, R-Okla., sent a letter Wednesday to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo after media reports that Turkey tracked U.S.-made F-16s flying in the eastern Mediterranean Sea during the Eunomia joint exercise in August involving France, Italy, Greece and Cyprus.

Reports of this activation make clear that Turkey has no intention of reversing course and divesting of this system," they wrote. The lawmakers seek more information on the alleged S-400 activation; whether Turkey can access NATO's tactical data link -- Link 16 -- through the system; and whether Russia can use this tactic as a backdoor to spy on America's allies.

"Reports also suggest that Turkey may plan a general test of the S-400 system near the city of Sinop," they wrote, referencing the northernmost point in the country on the Black Sea.

Turkey is not a real ally of the U.S.

So they did not fire them, but used the SAM radar system to simply track them? This article’s title makes it sound like they shot at US planes.

Did we ever get all our nukes out of that Incirlik US Airbase, a few years ago?

I don’t think anybody is saying. I seem to remember that ‘technically’ they are part of the NATO commitment to defend Turkey and therefore they are under local control as host country. If we were to pull them out that might create a diplomatic flap. If we did it secretly Turkey might know about it, but say nothing because of it making Erdogan look weak because he couldn’t stop it.

Only because they didn’t buy them from us instead. It doesn’t fit the game as planned.

Yeah, they likely just used the system’s radar to gather signature and profiling data, which will undoubtedly be shared with the Russians.

This is why we did not...and should never...allow Turkey acquire the F35.

The United States provides arms and equipment to other
nations.

We’re helping Poland right now, to what extent I’m not
exactly clear. I’m sure Russia is not too thrilled
with that.

The point is, I don’t see it as a terribly unusual thing
for Russia to do, to provide these S-400 systems to
Turkey.

Frankly, it says more about Turkey than it does Russia.

Turkey needs to consider if it’s wise to go up against
us. Turkey has much more to gain from siding with
Europe and the U. S.

Hey, it’s making it’s own bed.

Agreed. I used to work on Boeing’s AEW&C program, on Wedgetail (Australia). They wanted to move me over to Peace Eagle (Turkey) and I flat out refused. I knew way back then that Turkey was no ally and wanted no part of helping them in any way.

Let’s hope they use them on Russian planes one day. Wouldn’t that be ironic.

I think they plan on the monkey model F-16’s being in this situation. There’s a reason why they don’t ship with our production radar suite.
