On Election Night, the Real Winner Was Drugs
Reason ^ | Nov. 4, 2020 | Elizabeth Nolan Brown

Drugs are winning the war on drugs. [...] But there was one absolutely certain loser last night: the war on drugs. If Americans across the country provided a clear mandate for anything this year, it's ending the hold that drug prohibition has on our country.

Of nine drug decriminalization or legalization measures on state ballots last night—including two addressing hallucinogens and one covering all illegal drugs—not a single one failed. These were decisive victories, too, not close calls. And unlike some previous waves of pro-marijuana votes, which were concentrated in predictable areas, successful anti–drug war measures in 2020 spanned a diverse array of states.

Ballot measures making marijuana legal for recreational purposes passed in three: Arizona, Montana, and New Jersey. South Dakota approved both recreational and medicinal marijuana. In addition, Mississippi voters approved a medical marijuana measure.

Measures to OK consumption of hallucinogenic mushrooms got a green light from voters in the District of Columbia and in Oregon.

And Oregonians also approved Measure 110, partially decriminalizing all illegal drugs.

These drug measures didn't just eke out wins.

There seems to be no red state-blue state divide on this issue any more.

Liberals and leftist types are solidly behind legalizing drugs.

And they are joined by libertarian minded conservatives, so when these are put to a vote of the people, you have a majority of people who favor drug legalization.

Oh...then don’t use my tax dollars to deal with the consequences of drug use.

Libertarianism only works in a completely laissez-faire system it doesn’t work in a welfare state where my tax dollars have to pay the consequences of people that don’t work and people that use drugs

If the people are voting for drugs, we no longer need tax dollars to be put toward drug programs.

All it means is more job security for us clean folks.

Companies can fire you on the spot if you test positive for it being in your system.

They aren’t going to take a risk on a meth-head or coke addict.

Agreed, we will now have recreational marjuana in SD. The drug issue makes me very sad...innocent lives will be destroyed.. our society is totally hedonistic.

Government always takes a cut of profitable activities eventually, even if legalization is required to do it.

I first thought they meant the depressed or anxiety filled voters (us) were past their breaking point after years of fighting political battles and Covid. And now the outcome.

Headline clickbait today says “Record number of Google searches for where are liquor stores near me?”

Funny and sad.

P.S. I never drink or use drugs. I’m just depressed and angry.

10th Amendment

The “war on drugs” has been a colossal failure.

Yep, Blue State governors keeping their residents dumbed down.

Easier to control them.

High potency pot has destroyed Washington State. Homeless schizoid zombies are on every street corner and piled up in parks.

If drugs aren’t illegal, won’t it eventually be a civil right that you can’t be fired for using them?

Yep, Blue State governors keeping their residents dumbed down.

(a) These were referenda passed by voters, nothing to do with "governors."

(b) When did Mississippi, Montana and South Dakota become "blue states"?

I have a little game where I count the whacked out psychos every time I go outside my office building. When I got lunch today I counted four. Where I got lunch was the building next door.

On an average day, I’ll count 20-30 different psycho zombies just outside my building. Every one of them with a brain burned out by drugs. We should stop the pretense of calling it “mental illness” and just call it permanent brain damage.
