The '80s teen star's career sank in the Age of Trump with little sign of recovery
Sometimes appearances arent deceiving.
Take Tom Hanks, an actor many consider the successor to all-American superstar Jimmy Stewart. Hanks routinely plays Everyman heroes, characters who accomplish the incredible without incredible gifts or tricks.
Think Saving Private Ryan, Sully, Cast Away and Captain Phillips.
Hanks isnt a superhero in real life, but hes navigated Hollywoods choppy waters for decades without scandal and with routine acts of kindness. His early COVID-19 diagnosis, for example, allowed him to calm a shattered nations nerves.
Hes no saint, but audiences sense something solid, and decent, when he graces the screen.
And then theres John Cusack. There could be a reason why the quality roles have dried up for the 54 year old star, and it has little to do with his age.
He sounds
unhinged. His recent declaration? Nearly one-third of Americans are Nazis. And thats just the tip of the dystopian iceberg for Cusack.

He was in Sixteen Candles,a surprising good “teenage coming of age” film made in the 80s.He had a small role in it. But then Barbara Streisand has made one good song in her life (about 55 years ago).
To: Rummyfan
Hanks isnt in the same league as Jimmy Stewart.

Lest anyone forget he and Woody Harrelson came out against Desert Storm on the night the ground war started. By the time their rantings hit the media, it was over.

Streisand also did a good job in 1970s comedies. She is talented, but also a fruitcake.

He was a boyish looking guy in his prime. Now he looks old and dissipated.

Hanks was great in Catch Me If You Can, an underrated performance in an underrated movie.

I enjoyed the movie “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” but unfortunately I can’t enjoy movies anymore with actors who are so full of hate.

Maybe I am the only one, but I thought
Forrest Gump was an awful movie. Terrible. Other people seem to like it.
Burbs was terrible, and Joe Vs. the Volcano was terrible.
One thing is for sure, he's no Peter Scolari.
To: nickcarraway
I dont think Hanks has made anything good since the 80s.
He was pretty good in that Newhart Show with Larry, Darrell and Darrell.

Yeah, in the 80s and 90s, Cusack was probably my favorite actor. Hasn’t been that way since I found out what a raving Leftie he was. Not shedding any tears for him.
