My sister-in-law told of a similar situation back in the 1940s.
This happened to my wife in the early 1960s. We have a couple large military bases here and lots of veterans and active military. Her dad was in the army for 28 years and was tough as nails. They knew how to handle something along these lines without further traumatizing the kids involved. The guy who disappeared had a family but they were apparently better off without him.

A scout master in my old troop was sent to jail for 20 years for doing that.
They mortgaged the Philmont Ranch in NM a few years ago. I doubt they have much left except a tattered reputation.

That’s a little misleading, but you are right about the outcome.
The vast majority of these claims are from when the BSA banned open homosexuals from the organization completely. But that doesn’t mean that allowing in queers didn’t add gasoline to the fire.
I’ve gotten spam email soliciting claimants who’ve been sexually molested in the Scouts. They are fishing for “victims” with a carrot on a stick, so we shouldn’t be surprised that some money grubbing people won’t suddenly “remember something that happened.”
The organization will be long gone before the current crop of scouts under the newly sodomized BSA will be filing abuse cases. And they will be in the tens of thousands.
Almost all of these cases are from well before the BSA’s decision to allow openly gay scouts and scoutmasters, so blaming it on that makes little sense. The number of victims seems quite large to me, to the extent that I must confess being a little suspicious whether these are all real abuses cases, but scouting used to be significantly more popular, so I’m not sure how this sorts out %-wise. Maybe it’s a believable number given that context.
