“The idea of long haul trucks going electric is ridiculous.”

Several companies have started building long-haul trucks with hydrogen fuel cells.

“52 cents per kilowatt-hour”

This is exorbitant. It is mostly a service charge to use their facilities, not close to actual electric rates. Home electricity is less than half of this at even the worst cases like Germany. Australia is pretty bad, at about US$ 18Cents/kwh, which is in the California ballpark. Even so, even in Oz, you can home charge the Tesla for way less than gas prices. The downside is it will take all night.

BTW, this is a story from Australia which has different everything, so a lot needs to be adjusted to understand the context vis-a-vis the US.

These glorified electric golf karts should have the battery disposal cost as part of the purchase price.

I don’t care about the EXACT price.... Just to note that this entire article is based on an absolutely ridiculous error: presuming the price of gas is a fraction of what it realy is.

Elon Musk is crazy and this most recent notion of an industry group to lobby for banning gas-powered cars is downright foolish. But two crazies don’t make a sane mind. The Tesla Roadster was an extremely expensive car that did more damage to the environment than any car I can afford to drive, but it’s financing a whole new take on electric cars that WILL work.

Also stupid: the notion that because Teslas also require fuel, that they consume just as much carbon. That incremental unit of energy is going to be green; green energy is finally, after 50 years of lies, cheaper to create than carbon energy; even natural gas generates far less carbon than gasoline; 90 MPGe is still a lot better than 35 MPG (which would be great gas mileage for a sports car); Because lithium batteries don’t consume lithium, but are recyclable, there will be no shortage of Lithium as there are enough proven reserves for 4 billion cars and probably enough out there for 40 billion cars... the list goes on and on.

Truthsearcher :" $1.38 for premium unleaded in Australia? "

That price would be per liter; they use the metric system
Now imagine filling up your gas tank by typical 2 liter plastic bottles.
An imperial gallon of liquid is defined as 4.54609 litres,
Now multiply that $1.38 by 4.54609 and you have your answer !

In accordance with the latest five year plan, comrade.

What makes you think a used lithium battery will have a negative value?

Lonesome in Massachussets :" $1.00 US = $1.37 AU today "

I believe that you may be in error.
$1.73 US = $1.00 in AU .

The U.S. Gallon is 3.78541 liters, the U.S. dollar is 1.38 AU dollars, you are using a bigger gallon and smaller dollar. Price is $3.81/GAL is U.S. dollars and gallons.

Just googled it, again, and it’s still $1.37 AU = $1.00 US. Check again. Maybe we can make some money on the leverage.

The article states ; "in Australia".. "in AUSTRALIA
I believe they used the imperial gallon there, the metric system, and pay per liter.
The US dollar is more valuable than the AU dollar.
We seems to have some confusion regarding :
#1- the monetary exchange rate of US to AU
#2 -the size of the Australian imperial gallon in liters

What’s your point? That because Government Motors screwed the pooch on a nasty, cheap-ass version causing a whopping five fires, the technology isn’t viable? Tell ya what, try fixing a Ford Pinto with a software update and tell me how far you get.

Oh, yeah, I know... there’s that Tesla whose battery caused an explosion after a huge crash... as if gasoline-powered cars never have a flammability issue.
