"According to Tesla the cost of charging a Tesla Model 3 is $7 per 100km compared with $12 for a rival petrol car," WhichCar notes, before revealing the estimate uses "at least three incorrect figures". The report disputes "how much electricity a Tesla Model 3 uses, the cost of electricity at a Tesla Supercharger and the price of petrol."
It also notes Tesla's increase for its Supercharger to 52 cents per kilowatt-hour. The article calculates this recharging "even the most efficient" Model 3 Standard Range would cost $9.78 per 100km using a Supercharger.
It then notes that BMW's 330i costs $8 per 100km to fuel, assuming the country's average cost of premium unleaded at $1.38 - a figure sourced from the country's government. The BMW consumes 5.8 litres per 100km, which is below Tesla's estimates of 7.0 litres per 100km. This means the BMW is actually 18% cheaper to fuel than a Tesla is to recharge at a Supercharger.
And, if the negative results succeed from the recent (s)election process, we will learn a very expensive lesson. Some of us are well aware of it already.
...but the energy is so green. No fossil fuel, just plug them into the wall!!!
(yes, this is sarcasm...)
In 33 days, Tesla is in the S&P index.
It doesn’t factor in the value of feeling morally superior. THAT is priceless!
Wearing my shocked face.
Why is zerohedge ‘disallowed’?..............
Ping.
No rechargeable battery has been produced which has an infinite number of charge cycles.
When they reach the limit it is often “sudden death”.
Factor in the cost of replacing the battery system.
And how much does it cost in both dollars and CO2 to generate the electricity for this??
If you can afford a Tesla, fuel costs are among the least of your worries.
$1.38 for premium unleaded in Australia?
I’m waiting for Kalifornia to be the first state to slap a surcharge tax on Supercharger station use, to make up for their loss of gasoline excise taxes.
$1.38 for premium unleaded??? When you’re doing research, and you come across such a surprising figure, stop and verify!
In Australia, “petrol” costs $1.38/QUART!!!!
I like to follow various stock analysts and podcasts.
To a one - they all seem to be predicting that oil is “dead.” Not now, but by 2040. All cars and trucks will be electric, no one will need gasoline or diesel. Energy will all be “green” and renewable - and the key is - printed government money and debt will be behind it.
But reality seems to say something different.
$0.52 AU is $0.38 US. Residential rates in the U.S. average around $0.13/kWh. The price of electricity in Australia is about $0.25 US ($0.338 AU) kWh, so Tesla is putting on a large mark-up, over probably to cover the cost of the stations.
Wait till they force electrics on everyone, the price of electricity will skyrocket.
“52 cents per kilowatt-hour”
This is exorbitant. It is mostly a service charge to use their facilities, not close to actual electric rates. Home electricity is less than half of this at even the worst cases like Germany. Australia is pretty bad, at about US$ 18Cents/kwh, which is in the California ballpark. Even so, even in Oz, you can home charge the Tesla for way less than gas prices. The downside is it will take all night.
BTW, this is a story from Australia which has different everything, so a lot needs to be adjusted to understand the context vis-a-vis the US.
So where do these idiots think the electricity is coming from? Well mostly from burning coal.
better idea
charge up at home
costs much less than gasoline
Keep in mind that shrimp-on-the-barbie - land is one of the most expensive places on earth to purchase electricity. Of course the superchargers (no, not that kind) are going to cost more to top off than gasoline.
