“The same name might be bad luck.”

I think that’s very superstitious.

It probably is superstitious to some degree.
Let’s put it this way;
Would you like to go on a cruise aboard the
“new and improved” USS Titanic?

Here's the problem:

"U.S. Representative John P. Murtha, of Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District, delivered the principal commissioning address. Then Secretary of the Navy, John H. Dalton, placed the new ship in commission. Congressman Murtha's wife, Mrs. Joyce Murtha, served as Ship Sponsor, and christened the ship at Ingalls in May 1997. During the commissioning, Mrs. Murtha gave the traditional order to "Man our ship and bring her to life!" "

“The same name might be bad luck.”

The original Bon Homme Richard was lost to damage in the battle against Serapis that made John Paul Jones famous .

Keep the tradition going with the name.

In WW2, the Navy had a new Lexington, Yorktown, Hornet, and Wasp. They just renamed ships already being built to carry them name forward.
