A Texas state representative is working on legislation that would allow Texans to vote on a Brexit-style referendum to leave the Union and become a stand-alone nation.
Republican state representative Kyle Biedermann of Fredericksburg announced in a social media post on Tuesday that he is crafting a ‘Texit’ bill that would put secession on the ballot in Texas.
“The federal government is out of control and does not represent the values of Texans. That is why I am committing to file legislation this session that will allow a referendum to give Texans a vote for the State of Texas to reassert its status as an independent nation,” Biedermann wrote.
While Biedermann’s idea may be unconventional in this day and age, his legislation seems to be congruent with the plain text of the Texas state constitution.
Article 1, Section 1 of the Texas state constitution reads: “Texas is a free and independent State, subject only to the Constitution of the United States, and the maintenance of our free institutions and the perpetuity of the Union depend upon the preservation of the right of local self-government, unimpaired to all the States.”
Article 1, Section 2 could be read as an endorsement of sorts for secession: “All political power is inherent in the people, and all free governments are founded on their authority, and instituted for their benefit. The faith of the people of Texas stands pledged to the preservation of a republican form of government, and, subject to this limitation only, they have at all times the inalienable right to alter, reform or abolish their government in such manner as they may think expedient.”

Here we go.
Glad someone is making noise. My gutless senators are silent.
Here is an idea.
Texas will just recall their representatives and keep their tax money
As a Texas resident, I am 100% for this!!
This may be declared as a nut job asking for something that no one will agree with....my response is SO WHAT, most of the things the left propose are totally insane but as time goes by, they become mainstream thinking...
I say propose it and work for it even if you are the only person sponsoring the legislation....
“Start the ball Texter”!
How will you make up the red votes for those of us left behind?
For every dollar in federal taxes Texas pays they get back about $1.25 in federal spending in return. You're cutting your own throat.
It’s only appropriate that Texas leads the way.
Eventually, MANY will follow.
DEO VINDICE !
Guess I don’t get your angle. Join the republic or sit on your butt. Texas was a republic then joined us. Maybe we should reverse the process.
I believe TX is the largest contributor to the Fed.
Not sure how this would work without bringing along the farming states.
How will you make up the red votes for those of us left behind?
If the Biden scam goes unaddressed its sort of irrelevant as they will do whatever they want in future elections.
The pundits say, nothing will happen now, but it can effect the next election
If it legit why should it change. They never think of that angle, and don’t realize the Dems will never admit to the “ theft of a nation”
I just moved to TX about three months ago, and I support this.
good. that’ll get the feckless GOPE’s attention.
may God continue bless Texas! ok Tennessee and Alabama, your turn.
You're (incorrectly) assuming that Texas would keep the same levels of spending the current FedGov has.
Texas will be fine.
You want any oil?
Win-win for the rats. Get rid of a red state the whole country turns blue.
The winning elector number of 270 would be reduced accordingly to the electors from Texas. The number to be president would be less than 270 so it would be a wash.
I know we in OK will be right behind! Then AK LA AL MS GA & FL. This will lead to a permanent blue US government, and eventual collapse. We will consider allowing others in, with certain restrictions
