McConnell Blocks Vote on $2,000 Checks
The New York Times ^ | December 29th | Catie Edmondson

Senator Mitch McConnell blocked an attempt by Democrats on Tuesday to hold an immediate vote on increasing stimulus checks to $2,000 from $600, leaving the fate of the measure unclear as President Trump continued to demand the larger payouts and more Republicans publicly endorsed the idea.

Instead, Mr. McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the majority leader, provided vague assurances that the Senate would “begin the process” of discussing $2,000 checks and two other issues that Mr. Trump has demanded lawmakers address: election security and removing legal protections for social media platforms.

Mr. McConnell would not say whether he planned separate votes on the three issues or if he would bring them for a vote on the Senate floor at all. But in a sign of how he might approach them, the majority leader introduced new legislation on Tuesday afternoon combining the $2,000 checks, election security and social media provisions into one bill, which would most likely doom the effort.

Why not make it $5K or $10K? Free money for the masses! We have the bread, now where is the circus.

But hey, we can always print more for welfare cash, eh Donny and Chuck?

Let’s see how we can slant any story.

All the fake news that’s fit to slant .

Can’t understand why anyone with sense would spend their money on this rag.

The $600 checks are on their way already. And the other monies that will benefit the unemployed etc etc.

If folks have to wait a little longer for the balance of $2000, so be it. But the other items must be addressed and that's exactly what Mitch is doing.

Let's see what happens instead of crucifying him.

If so, Mitch just lost Georgia.

It is compensation for the negative economic effects of mismanagement by state government on individuals and businesses.

If you want the government to spend less overall, get it to stop waging endless wars and sending cash to foreigners.

Opposing help for American citizens in need is just mean.

To McConnell, losing Georgia is better than helping the dirty disgusting peasants who do repulsive things like physical labor.

This is the NY Slimes FReepers. I mean, c'mon now. FR was founded specifically to fight media bias and 24 years later some people still don't get it.

McConnell rejected the stand-alone $2,000 bill and is introducing both the Section 230 repeal, vote fraud investigation, as well as the $2,000 check.

Goebbels headline. McConnell has introduced his own $2000 Bill so obviously wants a vote on it.

Free money is the opiate of the masses. Opening the economy is the solution, not debt spending.

Some people can use the $$ and most of those see 600 as a slap in the face.

Like if you were drowning and someone tossed you doughnuts instead of a life ring.

Yes this can be a slippery slope but the govt did create this situation and even if they pay us $2k it is not even enough compensation.

"Let's see what happens instead of crucifying him."

I maybe posted too quickly in another related FR thread.

There is other stuff in the bill that's being negotiated.

So I agree, let's see what happens.

I don't trust the sociopaths on Capitol Hill as far as I could spit, but that's the game they play.

Which he knows won't pass.

It doesn’t have to pass. The thing with Trump is getting the GOP to fight back instead of caving all the fricking time. You have to understand Trump’s mindset.

Clearly it doesn’t matter to either party, may as well give it directly to citizens.

This is “welfare chauvinism”: welfare for me, but not for thee. Yes, I have close members of my family who benefit from this, but enough is enough for the free cash just because DJT (who I otherwise support) is for this.

Populism all to often becomes socialism for the “deserving” who are defined as “people like me.”

Enough with the free money that will continue to send us into debt so that out ancestors can enjoy bankruptcy.

Other than politics, it might be the best newspaper in North America. It is excellent on style, arts, investing, books, obituaries, etc., and as a gauge of social trends. It also has very good graphics and graphical design, far beyond the capabilities of most newspapers.
