The ambassador, a history professor, arrived with his family in mid-summer 1933, 5 months after the Reichstag fire in February which was exactly 4 weeks after Hitler took power. There from 1933 to 1937, they experienced (through their embassy interactions) the Night of the Long Knives (the murders of the SA, et al).
