Yup. Academic politics are the dirtiest politics because the stakes are so low for the tenured profs who engage in radical campus political actions.
It's been getting worse since the 1980s rise of politically correct Identity Politics and social justice studies on campus. A huge part of this was the fall of the Soviet Union.
It is ironic that the fall of communism in Russia resulted in the rise of a radical strain of cultural Marxism on campus here in America which grew out of the heated campus opposition Ronald Reagan who was vilified almost as much as President Trump.
Back before the fall of the Soviet Union, the Marxist Left in on campus in America was a strange mix of generally well meaning but deluded people of good will and groups of not so good revolutionaries and anarchists who wished to overthrow the US government and American society by any means necessary, especially violent ones.
The people on the good will side were typlicified by the economists and sociologists of the the “I have seen the future and it works” who were naive idealists. They are long gone as the fall of the Soviet Union exposed the evil and corruption of Communism and left them disillusioned, demoralized and discredited.
What was left of the campus Marxists were mostly 1960s radicals and revolutionaries who were under no illusions about the evils of Marxism and in fact embraced them.
The rise of these Marxist cadres on campus and the spread of their ideology over the last 35 yeas has been relentless and they have taken over the institutions and levers of power on campus. It is their passion and they have built their lives around the acquisition of power to further their neo Marxist agenda of "Hey, ho, Western Civ has got to go".
The normals were turned off the whole thing and just got out of the system and and got jobs and ceded campus life and culture to the Leftist zealots. These zealots have won control and are close to success on their destruction of the Western Culture and Civilization that they despise so much and have spent 30+ years Trying to undermine and eventually destroy.
Unfortunately, we are finding that Western Civilization is the only game in town when it comes to civilization and the fall of Western civilization equates to the end of civilization and the end to the culture that modern society. Western civ is the foundation that the success of our society is build upon.
Too bad, because we had a good long run and hate to see it go. Hope the next generation enjoys the brave new world they are deconstructing for themselves.
