Bill Russell cites Martin Luther King Jr. in call for Congressional action against Donald Trump: 'Good vs. evil'

As the nation celebrates the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Bill Russell invoked the civil rights icon Monday in a plea for action in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The NBA legend tweeted a message quoting King in a call for accountability for President Trump for his role in inciting his supporters to march on the Capitol before they ransacked the building in an assault that claimed five lives.

Russell framed his message as a matter of “good vs. evil” and quoted a passage from a sermon King delivered in New York in 1956.

‘Good vs. evil’

Here’s fuller context from King’s sermon at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.

“But we need not stop with the glaring examples of the Bible to establish the reality of evil; we need only to look out into the wide arena of everyday life,” King said. “We have seen evil in tragic lust and inordinate selfishness. We have seen it in high places where men are willing to sacrifice truth on the altars of their self-interest.

“We have seen it in imperialistic nations trampling over other nations with the iron feet of oppression. We have seen it clothed in the garments of calamitous wars which left battlefields painted with blood, filled nations with widows and orphans, and sent men home physically handicapped and psychologically wrecked. We have seen evil in all of its tragic dimensions.”

Russell famously worked alongside fellow athletes Muhammad Ali, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jim Brown at the 1967 Cleveland Summit that helped set the blueprint for Black athletes to harness their platforms to advance social causes.

He urged followers on Monday to contact their representatives in Congress to demand “that they hold Trump accountable for his actions.”

So someone who garnered the highest black voter support for a Republican presidential candidate since 1960 needs this to be done to him and that MLK’s name has to be invoked for this. I am trying to follow this logically but to little or no avail.

To see how much Donald Trump disturbs these people only serves to fuel my infuriation.

20 Woe to those who call evil good
and good evil,
who put darkness for light
and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet
and sweet for bitter!
21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes,
and shrewd in their own sight!
22 Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine,
and valiant men in mixing strong drink,
23 who acquit the guilty for a bribe,
and deprive the innocent of his right!

24 Therefore, as the tongue of fire devours the stubble,
and as dry grass sinks down in the flame,
so their root will be as rottenness,
and their blossom go up like dust;
for they have rejected the law of the Lord of hosts,
and have despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

I saw the headline, and I wondered why someone would ask an old Dodgers' shortstop about Martin Luther King.

Sept 2019, BEFORE Biden and the lefty Dems’ comrades in communist China intentionally allowed the virus to get here and spread like wildfire, and BEFORE the anarcho-communist ANTIFA and (also communist) so-called “Black Lives Matter” -led rioting, fires, looting, and attacks on police...

Sept 2019: New York (CNN Business) - Black unemployment fell to a record low in August [2019], helped by a jump in the number of black women on the job. The unemployment rate for black workers fell to 5.5% from 6%, according to the Labor Department data.

The previous record low of 5.9% was set in May 2018. The unemployment rate for black women fell to a record 4.4% from 5.2% in July. The unemployment rate for black men crept up to 5.9% from 5.8%. But the previous month’s rate was a record, so the rate is still near its historic low.

Unemployment among workers who identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino also fell in August to 4.2%, which matched a record low set earlier this year. ....”

The record low unemployment rate for African-Americans is undeniably good news, said Valerie Wilson, director of the program on race, ethnicity and the economy for the Economic Policy Institute. ....”

—Chris Isidore, CNN Business, September 6, 2019
__________________________________________

CNN analyst [black, open communist] Van Jones told Democrats to “wake up” Tuesday night because President Donald Trump is “effective” in “going after enough black votes to cause us problems.” “What he was saying to African-Americans can be effective,” Jones told a CNN panel following Trump’s State of the Union address.

“You may not like it but he mentioned HBCUs [Historic Black Colleges and Universities]: black colleges have been struggling for a long time, a bunch of them have gone under, he threw a lifeline to them in real life in his budget.

He talked about this. He talked about criminal justice reform. He talked about Opportunity Zones.” ...”

“I think what you’re going to see him do, you may not like my rhetoric, but look at my results and my record for black people. If he narrow casts that, it’s going to be effective,” he said. ...”

The CNN analyst, who has praised Trump in the past for criminal justice reform, said Democrats cannot afford to underrate Trump’s ability to attract non-white voters. In Tuesday’s address, Trump cited black unemployment numbers that are the lowest ever recorded.

A recent Gallup poll also revealed that satisfaction with “race relations” has jumped 14% since Trump took office.”

First Step Act

“Americans from across the political spectrum can unite around prison reform legislation that will reduce crime while giving our fellow citizens a chance at redemption.”

—President Donald J. Trump

ACHIEVING GROUNDBREAKING REFORM:

The landmark First Step Act enacted commonsense criminal justice reform that is helping prisoners gain a new lease on life and is making America safer.

In December 2018, President Donald J. Trump signed into law the First Step Act, marking the first major reforms to our criminal justice system in over a decade.

The First Step Act enacted commonsense reforms to make our justice system fairer and help inmates successfully transition back into society.

President Trump remains committed to building on this success and continuing the great work achieved by this legislation. ...”

On MLK day, did you see one major or minor media organization urging BLM to go back to the non-violent strategy of MLK? Or even just to listen and pay attention to it?

I think I got these Martin Luther King quotes from earlier posts here:

“Now is not the time to “engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism””

“A riot is the language of the unheard”

a call for accountability for President Trump for his role in inciting his supporters to march on the Capitol before they ransacked the building in an assault that claimed five lives

Trump said, "I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard".

That's what Trump said which has been distorted into "inciting his supporters". Hell, it's not even distorted since the two and not remotely connected. The press just made it up, and that's dangerous.

BTW, I believe that 3 of the 5 people who died that day died from underlying health problems, not from the "rioting". A cop was killed also (still haven't heard the straight scoop on that).

Yawn...

If MLK was alive today he’s be standing with the deplorables... MLK did NOT make a point of standing with the white liberal establishment like Bill Russell is doing. Read some history books Bill Russell - Bull Connor was a white democrat ‘elite’...

Bill Russell used to coach the Seattle Supersonics back in the mid 70's and his wife's family lived in south King County near my home at the time.
I was fueling up at a service station and noticed a Rolls Royce on the other side of the pumps (self service) and it's Russell pumping his own gas, so I say something like "nice car, coach". It was just the two of us and he was only 6 feet away but he remained silent with zero response. Oh well, I thought.
