#17 re “How useful were informers” in Nazi Germany (and the Soviet Union/Bloc, Red China, No. Vietnam, No. Korea and Communist Cuba/Nicaragua?

VERY!!!!!

In Red Chinese prisons they were known as “beetles”, often plants among the prisoners to see who were the most dangerous to the state. I knew an American Jesuit priest imprisoned in RC who saw the beetles in action.

A couple US POWs in the Hanoi Hilton were looked at as possible informers, basically in the 10 or so “peace committee” group. I have friends in the Hanoi Hilton who told me about this plus there was some publicity on the subject that was quietly put to bed, forever.

No, the Party was not primarily responsible for policing the populace in a search of political deviates.

The Geheimstaatspolizei (your meme references Gestapo HQ) was tasked with that assignment.

Goebbels, as Propaganda Minister, was also intensely interested in "unvarnished" public opinion, and had a legion of operatives to report on the actual Volksmeinung, e.g., a day after an important speech had been given or a "tactical retreat" on the Eastern Front announced.

They were also very interested in jokes about the Nazi elite. In fact, they collected them!

Regards,
