Hank had more games to play in than Ruth in order to beat Ruth’s number of HR’s.
RIP, Hammerin’ Hank.
Media says it was the cause - The Liberty Daily.
Similar to when I did some umpiring. Told both coaches “I call a big strike zone. I want these kids swinging the bat, not waiting for walks.”
‘Yep, reminds me of the good old days.’
he and Ernie Banks were my favorites in the late fifties; simply the best, both of them...
The key to pitching is to either fool the batter or overpower him.
The key to hitting is to either keep your hands from committing too soon and being too quick to overpower.
Hammerin’ Hank had the quickest wrists on the planet; and he made it look smooth and easy; same as he did in the outfield.
The greatest slugger in my lifetime ( I was not alive to see Babe Ruth, so hard to tell who was better ).
Hank will never be forgotten.
I didn’t know that. Thanks.
‘I want these kids swinging the bat, not waiting for walks.”
in my three year varsity stint in high school, I walked exactly once, hbp twice...my hitting philosophy; why let the umpire take your at bat away from you...?
Oh, Henry!.......................................
Sadly, Hammerin' Hank got a lot of hate mail as he approached breaking the Babe's 714 career homerun record. He also developed a close friendship with Saduharu Oh, Japan's home run king who, early in his career dealt with a lot of racist yahoos himself since his father was Chinese.
Oh has retained his Taiwanese citizenship to this day, but mostly got over the racist yahoos that got to Hank. Aaron once told a Japanese reporter that he'd kept all the hate mail because someday nobody would believe he got it.
There is zero danger of that given today's toxic political climate which finds racism everywhere.
Exactly, at the little kid level pitching is hard and if you got kids standing in the batter’s box waiting for walks the fielders begin to lose attention, then an infielder gets hurt being nailed by a liner.
Real home run king!
I remember watching ans waiting for #715.
I need to go fish out the baseballs my brother-in-law gave to me . There were two of them - he was a volunteer of some sort at the stadium. It was from an all-star game in Minneapolis. I’m pretty sure they have Ernie Banks, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Catfish Hunter, etc.
I was watching an episode of Antique Roadshows the other night. The women said her grandfather was the assistant to Babe Ruth. She had a letter, a letterman’s jacket and 3 awards for the “Babe”. Something like $500,000.
“Oh my! And this is just a small sample of what my grandfather left us!”
What a life story. Hammerin’ Hank! RIP.
