For starters, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) announced last week a lawsuit challenging the results of Proposition 22, which exempted drivers for companies such as Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash from the ominous provisions of Assembly Bill 5.

I think he meant "onerous," not "ominous." Perhaps he couldn't afford to hire a proofreader? :-P

To the extent AB5 trampled Contract Law to a precedent-setting degree, yeah, “ominous” — as in “portending more of the same or worse” — is completely appropriate.
