I think you are right. “It was just a prank” is exactly what school bullies yell when someone finally fights back and they don’t like the comeuppance.

Also it’s kind of suspicious that every article on this repeats the “prank for a youtube channel” claim but none of them mention his screen name and his name doesn’t seem to have ever come up in connection with any other story. Even if it really was a prank it would not exactly be a “starter prank” and many people who run popular youtube channels have their real names out there in connection with it or have been the news for some reason.
