Last statue of General Franco on Spanish soil is pulled down and removed in 'day of history' for the country

Spain's north African enclave of Melilla has removed the country's last public statue of former dictator General Francisco Franco 45 years after his death.

A 2007 law passed by a previous Socialist government obliges towns to remove public symbols of the Franco era and to rename streets named after the dictator or generals who fought with him in the civil war.

The local assembly voted on Monday to remove the statue - which the government of Melilla said was 'the last statue of Franco in the public sphere in Spain' - to comply with this law, with only the far-right Vox party voting against. The conservative Popular Party (PP) abstained.

Vox argued the statue was a tribute to Franco for defending the city during the Rif War against Moroccan rebels and not a homage to him as a dictator.

Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has made reparations for the victims of the Franco era one of his priorities since coming to power in 2018.

Commies in Spain trying to erase history just like they do here.

And yes, Franco is still dead.

Agree, Spain DODGED A BULLET by having the good guys win that civil war. If you have any doubt, look what side the Leftists around the world took in it.

Because Spain would have been so much better off if it had gone commie (well, actually, had gone commie all at once by revolution, instead of over decades on the socialist installment plan).

I used to look down my nose at him and Pinochet. Now I see they saved their nations from communism. And we might need someone to set things right here, on behalf of the giant majority that won in 2016 and 2020.
Never thought I would think that, but here we are.

Neutral” Franco helped Hitler in WWII. Nazis were all over Spain, and spying on Gibraltar allied shipping.

Only to choose communism anyway and become a third rate (soon to be third world) country.

They never mention the Red Terror where leftist scumbags killed tens of thousands of Catholic priests, nuns and brothers.

No. They show that retarded picture of Guernica by Picasso

Amen to that. Spain is hopeless. Franco loved his country, and did what was needed to protect it against communism. The way things are now, might as well give Spain to the Mudslums. Good old El Cid is spinning in his grave.

Is history good to him? I read Orwell’s “Homage”. Couldn’t figure who the bad guys were. Where did Franco fit in? Orwell gets shot in the neck. An inch the other way he doesn’t write “1984”.

My first trip to Spain was during Franco’s tenure. Armed forces were plentiful on rooftops in Madrid.

“Guernica”

Interesting note on that painting - Picasso had begun working on it long before the airstrike. He renamed the painting after hearing of it.

“Only to choose communism anyway and become a third rate (soon to be third world) country.”

We’ll see how it goes. It’s much tougher to rig elections in Europe (and for that matter, most Third World countries) than it is for Democrats to rig elections here, and so when the people of Spain (and for that matter, the rest of Europe) see our quickly-approaching collapse into despotism, then their socialism may not hold the same attraction there as it does now...and given their voting systems, they may actually be able to do something about it, short of a violent revolt.

Franco saved Spain from Communism...only to have the Communists take over and win in the end. Very sad.

But Spain was also a safe haven for escaping allied aircrew and all sorts of refugees from Nazi occupied Europe. And an entry point for some allied spies.

It has to be remembered that starving impoverished Spain lived off Allied food, fuel and commodity shipments, that Germany couldn’t provide.

Spain played with both sides.

Kinda and kinda not. He managed to stave off any full-on nazi invasion or occupation, and kept them out of the hands of Moscow. Don’t forget, there was literal NKVD in Spain, mass murdering and acting exactly as they did at home. The Spanish Civil war ended less than 6 months before WWII started. There were things Franco could have done had he wanted that would have made life very tough on the allies.

He could have let the Germans build sub pens and not be restricted to short stops as a neutral.
He could have easily allowed the nazis to launch at attack from Spain to take Gibraltar, turning the Med into an axis lake.

It was a close run game, and he never joined the allies, but he never truly joined the axis effort.

The fighting in Barcelona was between communists “lite” and original old school communists. Orwell was with the “lite” variety, that lost the fight in Barcelona.

The Spanish left during the civil war was a mess of factions. But the Soviet-brand communists had control of the military and ran the war, at least that was so after a few months into it.
