PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Department of Transportation is studying use of remote technology to help manage highway traffic that needs to merge when approaching a highway work zone involving at least one lane closure.
ADOT says it has set up a “smart work zone" with a remotely controlled system using computers, portable message boards and sensors to provide drivers with real-time instructions based on changing circumstances.
The study is being conducted at two bridge rehabilitation sites on Interstate 40 between Flagstaff and Winslow in northern Arizona.
The remote system directs westbound traffic to merge into one lane well ahead of the work sites if traffic is light but encourages drivers to wait to merge as long as possible if traffic is heavy.

PING!
Instructions wired daily...
The “Zipper merge” never caught on...just another replay.
“The “Zipper merge” never caught on...just another replay.”
It works for 90%.
Might work in the midwest where folks are more polite, but in the dog-eat-dog daily highway competition of the Acela corridor...not a chance.
Just something else to be hacked and cause chaos.
If they run it like their elections, Maracopa County will see a huge death increase.
All Your U-Turns Belong to Us
Where two lanes go into one, many people will wait until it merges so they can pass those waiting in line in the open lane. You need to fill up both lanes so there is no advantage in staying in the lane that is closed ahead.
My experience is if 2 lanes merge into 1, every other car should merge into the open lane as a courtesy. Those in the open lane should allow this. Of course the roads are full of inexperienced drivers who’d rather shoot you than show a bit of courtesy in heavy traffic.
It was considered proper driving etiquette in Los Angeles as well not that long ago, but it’s not really the case anymore.
I did enjoy an older lady loudly berating a guy for failing to “take his turn” on a freeway on-ramp a couple of weeks ago. Dude flipped her the bird, but he got in line.
There are some people you just know you don’t want to mess with.
