I’m not an apologist for China, and I actually go back 30 years, when a friend of my buddy’s, who was just on this side of heroin said, out of the blue (in 1990): “China has 100 million people living at Western standards.”
It FREAKED me out, and so I went to my handy 1990 World Almanac, and it said China’s per-capita income was $231 per year. No way they could have 100 million people living at Western standards with such a low PCI. But it still scared me, so I checked in 1991 - still $231, nothing to worry about.
