They are saying this could be bigger than Mt. Pinatobu in the Phillippines. While Krakatoa and Pompeii eruptions were more famous and deadlier, Pinatobu released the most volcanic ash and volume in recorded human history.

I remember the incredible sunsets we had for months after that eruption. I was in the southern US, but we were affected.

I believe the largest volume of material ejected in the past 1500 years or so was the eruption of Mt Tambora in 1815. It was estimated to be a VEI 7 eruption.

Per this list Pinataubo was a VEI 6 (yeah, I know, it's Wikipedia)

If this does release a lot of ash, it will affect climate around the world for several years, as the ash will have a cooling effect on the planet. But, thankfully, President Trump knew enough to prepare for this type of very predicable event and stayed out of the Kyoto Global Warming Treaty, because had the treaty been in force while this eruption took place, it’s very possible that we could drive the planet into a new ice age.

I doubt that and whoever said it simply do not know. It is a fissure eruption at this point BUT, BUT, BUT, the Laki eruption which lasted for months and ended in 1784-feb and pumped so much sulfur dioxide gas up into the atmosphere that it caused thousands of deaths worldwide. Matter of fact, there are estimates that the thing caused the largest catastrophic death rate of any volcano in written history. It took out over 20% of Icelands population..that they do know.

And it was a VEI 4...
