Buttigieg Has an Update About His Mileage Tax Idea

Just last week Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg floated a funding idea for President Biden’s upcoming multi-trillion-dollar infrastructure bill that would hit poor and middle-class Americans that hardest.

Buttigieg suggested a mileage tax, which is based on what he called the “user pays principle—the idea that part of how we pay for roads is you pay based on how much you drive.” Drivers would thus be hit with this tax in addition to facing steadily climbing gas prices since President Biden took office.

Now, however, he’s walking back that suggestion.

In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Monday, the former South Bend, Indiana, mayor said a mileage tax is “not part of the conversation about this infrastructure bill.”

“So just want to make sure that that’s really clear, but you will be hearing a lot more details in the coming days about how we envision being able to fund this,” Buttigieg said. “And again, these are carefully thought-through responsible ideas that ultimately are going to be a win for the economy and need to be compared to the unaffordable cost of the status quo.”

He then reiterated Biden’s pledge to not raise taxes on those earning under $400,000.

OFFS! So the former 'mare' of south bend(over) wants us to believe that pedo joe said: "If anyone asks you about the tax thing for folks making under 400K, tell them I said no way mannnnnnn." What a cluster this gaggle is. Sectran, tax mileage. Oh, never mind that's not what I said. Assign commie-lah 'fweedumb' hawiss the border "issue". But only diplomantically speaking. She won't actually be doing anything. Which is most likely a good thing when you think about it. Probably spending time whining about the remodel taking too long. The cdc chief "FEELS" a sense of impending doom. And the lame stream runs with it. Well, that scientific for sure. Good grief.

If he “walks it back” and downplays it, he can feign surprise when it actually happens.

what he called the “user pays principle

A new trend is on the way: the Dems pay principle. As in losing the House and Senate.

Lying in bed with his "husband" with his thinking cap on, sipping pink lemonade and all that thinking produces this "update?"

He was told to back down because with the higher gas prices, the Dims think they would get that revenue.

That just means they won’t call it a ‘mileage tax’.

I don’t mind mileage tax.

But, only after a person passes the 100,000 miles mark for a year.

In five years, this trend toward E-cars will occur, and the gas tax revenue will slump by 20-percent. When that starts to occur...the feds will freak a bit. Five years after that point....gas tax revenue will probably be 40-percent off the norm.

Not that I’m supportive of a mileage tax, but once the gas tax revenue falls by 20-percent....all of the logic to stick with it goes away.

However, massive mileage fraud will occur with literally everyone cheating on the system. You see this already in Europe with cars being trimmed of half their mileage in resell efforts.

What happened to rolling back the Trump tax cuts and taxing the rich to pay for everything? Could it be that they lied?

I was expecting buttjuice or some other demonrat to do this sooner or later with electric cars. Though it will just go to the democrat general fund and not the highway fund like now, and the fuel tax will never go away. Though it should be based on vehicle weight as I am pretty sure a motorcycle doesn’t do as much damage as a big ass truck

How about putting the tax-per-mileage on electric cars only? That would be fair since they are not buying gas or diesel and thus not paying taxes. Let these folks pay their fair share of road usage.

Also, how about ending subsidies for electric cars?

We also need an internet and social media tax to pay for free wifi and 5G cellular networks. 50 cents for every page view seems fair. Also a netflix tax. 50 cents for every show you watch. And an Amazon tax, $2 for every package because the box is so destructive to the environment. And an airplane tax, because only the rich can afford them and they are rich so they can afford it. And a boat tax to save the fish. And a tax on illegal drugs. If you buy a baggie on a street corner 10% sales tax applies. Pay your fair share junkies.

we already have a mileage tax, its just spelled differently.

It called a gas tax. Use more gas, pay more tax.

Why does the govt like a mileage tax? Control. They would have the authority to track your movement.

I am a user that pays. I drive over 1,000 miles per week and I pay for that the 2-3 times a week I fill up with gas.

I have no idea what the tax rate on electricity is for the federal government if any but in reality that is where they will need to look in the future when they force everyone to use an electric car.

The gas tax is fine. It is being spent on things other than the roads and is mixed in the general fund. That is why it’s short all the time.

It would have to be a tax on miles exceeding 10,000 or some such threshold. It would hit the working class and poor the hardest. Trade jobs commuting to work, minimum wage jobs, service jobs, the working class. The wealthy would laugh it off. Not a good look for the Dems.

So, let me get this straight.

We hired the government to build us roads, bought and paid for by taxpayers.

Once built, the government is gracious enough to rent the roads back to us.

Am I seeing this right?
