Sultanate Confirms Duterte’s Maranao Lineage

The Bangsamoro Sultanate of Lanao, headed by Sultan Edrieza Nasser Rimbang Al-Haj, a parliament member of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA), has recognized and confirmed the Maranao lineage of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

This confirmation comes after Rimbang Al-Haj made a series of consultations among the council of elders and sultan representatives from the Pat a Pangampong sa Ranao as well as the Igma and Taritib of the Maranaos.

Rimbang Al-Haj said the announcement of the confirmation of Duterte’s Maranao blood lineage coincided with the President’s natal day celebration on March 27. The sultan’s wife is a distant relative of Duterte.

Some Bangsamoro leaders went to Davao City to extend their birthday greetings to the President.

Meanwhile, Maranao royalty and attorney Saidmen Pangarungan, who is a former Lanao del Sur governor and is now the head of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF), also confirmed that President Duterte has Maranao blood based on salsila (genealogy).

In a Facebook post titled “PRRD: The Maranao Pride,” the NCMF Secretary cited literature written by professors Asangan Madale, Dr. Ben Kadil and Helen Kadil that traced the Bangsamoro salsila of the President to his great ancestor, Datu Samporna, a Maranao nobleman of Momungan, which is now Baloi, in Lanao del Norte.

Pangarungan said Datu Samporna, at age 21, went to Iligan and sailed toward Cagaayahan, which is now Cagayan de Oro, in 1622.

Pangarungan said Samporna “replaced Datu Salangsang as the new ruler of Cagaayahan and was offered marriages to princess-daughters of prominent families that begot the prominent descendants of Mindanao and the Visayas such as Neri, Roa, Fernandez, Chaves, Velez, Rivera, Bautista, San Jose, Rodriquez, Gaerlan, Emano, Pelaez, Fernan, Badelles and Cabili, among others.

Pangarungan said when the Spaniards arrived in the 17th century and when Recoletos missionary priest Fr. Pedro de Santa Barbara officiated the Holy Mass, many of the Samporna families were Christianized and were given the name Neri. However, some of Samporna’s descendants moved to Boroon, Wato, Tugaya and Ganassi in Lanao and retained their Islamic faith.

The three professors claimed that Eleno Samporna Neri Roa got married to Fortuna Gonzales and begot Soledad “Soleng” Samporna Neri Roa, a public school teacher and civic leader.

Soledad got married to Vicente Duterte, who was then the governor of Davao. They were blessed with five children, namely Eleanor Jocelyn, Don, Benjamin and Rodrigo.

Sounds like emphasis on tribal differences being used by Moslems when it should be theological differences undercut by that present Vatican leader pushing the Abu Dahbi concord
