The former Department of Justice official accused of trying to extort $25 million from Rep. Matt Gaetz slammed the allegations as a “blatant attempt to distract” from the federal sex-trafficking probe that’s underway.
David McGee, a former federal prosecutor in Florida who is now working at the firm Beggs & Lane, denied blackmailing Gaetz, who is under investigation for his alleged sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl.
“It is completely false,” McGee told the Washington Post. “It’s a blatant attempt to distract from the fact that he’s under investigation for sex trafficking of minors.”
McGee added, “I have no connection with that case at all, other than, one of a thousand people who have heard the rumors.”
After news of the probe involving Gaetz broke on Tuesday, the Florida congressman accused McGee of trying to shake his family down for $25 million.
The Republican claimed the existence of the DOJ probe was leaked to the media in an effort to thwart the FBI investigation into the alleged extortion plot.

And to distract the media from the numerous Biden admin disasters, particularly at the border.
You either did ask for $25 million or you did not.
Well of course he does.
DOJ is basically a criminal organization and corruption is extreme.
This is why we really can’t accept their allegations especially since their information comes from the equally corrupt agencies such as DEA, FBI, etc
Their conviction rate is 95% or so. You don’t get that without faking evidence or spending victims into impoverishment so they can’t defend themselves.
Odd how the ‘nyt’ broke the story the day before the money part of the deal was gonna happen. Almost like someone in the fbi leaked it or something....... Nah!

If this isn’t strictly a hit piece, then things are openly criminal at the DoJ where 96% of the employees donate to Democrats.

I wonder if Gaetz has a copy of the recorded conversation. Probably not. For him to actually name the person he is accusing of this extortion attempt is very risky in terms of a slander lawsuit. It is confusing to try to discern what is going on here. If he tries to subpoena the FBI recording, based upon past experience it will probably take three years for them to produce any such evidence. On the other hand, if he is guilty of this, that, and the other, then why is it he, in the form of his dad, wearing a wire? How is it conceivable that recording a conversation is going to exonerate him?
McGee is not a Whistle Blower.

So this dude trying to get the millions is a lawyer in private practice and does not even work for the justice dept at the time of the alleged extortion?

If this investigation began when the Times said he would have been charged by now if there was anything to it.
That’s a good layout of possible scenarios.
My first thought is, any ex-DOJ official who is trying to shake-down a U.S. Congressman is going to be smart enough not to have explicit demands recorded or a part of a paper trail.
In fact, I tend to lean toward the side of this story where this is all intentional, well timed, and meant to attack Gaetz for things he may be involved in.
Why?
Don’t forget the model that was best excemplified by FusionGPS. It was a group of media/press people and lawyers formed for the purpose of attacking people on political grounds. With the way that everything seems to be getting politically weaponized these days, I would not be suprised at all if this ex-DOJ ‘official’ is apart of a larger conspiracy to attack Gaetz.
Then again, maybe he can’t resist those 17 year olds.
