The only thing the EU said was “let’s respect the Good Friday agreement to keep no borders on the island of Ireland. And don’t bully our member-state Ireland”

This option that Boris signed whereby politically NI remains in the UK, while economically it is part of a wider Ireland is the only sensible option - these unionists are fools. They get what they want “NI in the UK”, so why are they making a fuss? If they keep doing this, they’re going to push more Northern Irish who would have wanted to keep the status quo (i.e. remain part of the UK) to thinking “let’s reunite with the RoI”

If you think that this would push Unionists to turn pro-EU, think again.

It tends to be forgotten that at an early stage in the talks on the Brexit withdrawal agreement, the EU offered a deal which would have avoided the otherwise unsquareable circle of Republic of Ireland/Northern Ireland/mainland UK trade. This deal would have kept the whole of the UK in the Customs Union, even when it was no longer in the European Single Market etc.

This is already in place with some other neighbouring non-EU states, such as Turkey. The UK turned this down, ostensibly because it might prejudice future trade deals with third countries. So we are where we are.

Cui bono?
