COVID-19 has reawakened America’s spirit of misdirected anxiety, inspiring businesses and families to obsess over risk-reduction rituals that make us feel safer but don’t actually do much to reduce risk—even as more dangerous activities are still allowed. This is hygiene theater.

I am sure even Abraham Lincoln would agree with me.
We’ve had security theater for 20 years now, and I don’t see it ending any time soon.
Part of the reason for the scrubbing was wives tales from the past and also the lack of face masks. People had to be made to think they were doing something to prevent infection, so useless scrubbing was the preferred option.
I wonder what else this reporter got wrong?
“The fact that surface areas—or “fomites,” in medical jargon—are less likely to convey the virus...”
We have a bottle of Lysol that I bought last Spring. Still haven’t opened it. Don’t wear masks, don’t use hand sanitizer. Haven’t been sick in several years. We’ve had it all I guess and are immune.
“We’ve had security theater for 20 years now...”
Indeed. And we got Homeland Security and TSA.
Then, we got...Obama? Uh...wut?
They want us to wear a mask to defend against the Covid, but they don’t want us to carry a gun to defend against evil.
what do you think the reporter got wrong ?
Definition of fomite
: an object (such as a dish, doorknob, or article of clothing) that may be contaminated with infectious agents (such as bacteria or viruses) and serve in their transmission
Bingo.
Years ago, they would have a nightly “shower show” at the local strip joint...is this the same thing
There was an article by a supposedly good doctor who claimed that COVID could become a bacteriophage which means that we should actually be doing much more scrubbing.
Probably because some states are mandating extraordinary measures. If you run a nationwide chain it is probably best to institute a uniform policy for consistent customer service. There is a reason a Big Mac tastes the same in Peoria as it does in Prague.
Not to mention, none of them want to get a dreaded B plaque on the window.
It’s all about making people feel safer, not actually making them safer.
I would think that wet dish rags are a source of infection.
I wash my hands all the time. Every time I return home. Even before Covid.
I cannot remember the last time I had a cold.
Also, apparently Vitamin C and zinc helps prevent Covid.
Personally, I think it’s here to stay. We are going to have to learn to live with it and get off of the obsession with masks.
Spring Cleaning probably comes from the Jewish tradition of cleaning the house out of bread (including crumbs etc) during Passover, which comes around springtime. I don’t know for a fact - just an educated guess.
Yup. No one in our house has changed our normal lifelong routines. The only purpose for a mask is to prevent the dorky-looking mask Nazis from throwing insults or rocks at us.
From ‘the Atlantic’? WTH?
Ahh.. you get it.
Evil? Isn’t that dissent. That’s a flogging offense.
