A senior Kremlin official today warned that if Russia is forced to defend its citizens in the disputed Donbass region it would be 'the beginning of the end Ukraine.'
Tensions have soared in eastern Ukraine in recent weeks after Vladimir Putin dispatched tanks, helicopters and thousands of troops to the Ukrainian border.
Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenskiy flew into Donbass today in a new show of strength as he shook hands with soldiers along the frontier which separates them from Russian-backed rebels.
Putin insists the build up of military hardware close to the border is defensive and that upcoming drills are part of routine 'combat readiness' inspections.
But the deputy head of Russia's presidential administration, Dmitry Kozak, continued the Kremlin's tough rhetoric today, as he warned: 'The start of military action - this would be the beginning of the end of Ukraine.'

I bet they don’t take the Baltics. Too much trouble for too little gain. But Ukraine petitioning for NATO membership signed its own death warrant. As if Mexico had asked to join the Warsaw Pact in 1973.
They will sign a nonaggression pact with Germany, demand Poland and Estonia leave NATO (which they will do), take Eastern Belarus and Ukraine and give Kresy back to a newly friendly Poland, maybe get basing rights in Talinn, and that will be that.

And there’s not much they really could do about it, apart from issuing protesting position papers and agreeing on a few sanctions.

That’s where it will get interesting. The Ukraine is not a member of NATO. But the three Baltic states are. So if Putin does move on the Baltics, I would expect even more protesting position papers, and even more sanctions.

The Kremlin laments that when the breakup of the Soviet Union occurred Ukraine and the Baltic states were allowed to become independent. The Russians have always viewed these states as part of the Russian Federation. They view their loss as a self inflicted, catastrophic mistake that must be corrected. Taking back the Crimea was only the first step. The major question for the United States and the American people is this. Do the American people wish the sacrifice of blood, treasure and perhaps much more and see it in their security interests to go to war with Russia to secure the current European borders. IMHO: No! and get out of NATO now.

With the new scam election laws, Putin has until 2036 to try to rebuild his empire. He wouldn’t attack the Baltics right away, he’d gradually destabilize them with a few coups sprinkled in.
