Sounds fair to me.

If you did something stupid to slip and fall, I’d be good with that...

Correct. But - and this gets REALLY complicated - what most people don’t understand is that under international maritime law, when a pilot is aboard and in control of the ship, generally the only party that is (conditionally) indemnified is the master of the ship. The owner and insurer of the vessel retains assumed liability even if the pilot acts grossly negligent and his service was required by statute. I know, it doesn’t seem right, but that’s the way it works.

There are some local exceptions to this where governing bodies - be it national, provincial, state, municipal - may extend insurance options to the vessel operators. IOW, the regulating authority might say: Hey, you can purchase insurance from us that indemnifies you (partially or fully) while the pilot, that we require, is aboard. I think some California ports have this option. I haven’t seen in in South Florida or on the St Lawrence Seaway system; pilots are required on all foreign-flagged ships throughout the Seaway and all the Great Lakes.

I’m not sure what the options are available to vessel operators through the Suez.

Re: MSN.com reporters sure post a lot of solid news...

It is an AFP wire service story. AFP is owned by the French government.

MSN.com is a news aggregator. They buy most of their content.

I read that she is Egypt's first female harbor pilot.

I think that was an early rumor. Egypt's first female pilot was on another ship hundreds of miles away.

Marwa Elselehdar: 'I was blamed for blocking the Suez Canal'

News had broken about a huge container ship, the Ever Given, that had become wedged across the Suez Canal, bringing one of world's major shipping routes to a halt.

But as she checked her phone, online rumours were saying she was to blame.

"I was shocked," says Ms Elselehdar, Egypt's first female ship's captain.

At the time of the Suez blockage, she was working as a first mate, in command of the Aida IV, hundreds of miles away in Alexandria.

Egypt's first female captain at centre of hideous Suez allegation

Egypt’s first female ship captain has revealed she was blamed by hordes of online trolls for blocking the Suez Canal despite being on a different ship hundreds of kilometres away.

Marwa Elselehdar, 29, was working as a first mate in command of a ship in Alexandria when she started seeing online rumours which claimed she was to blame for the huge container ship that became wedged, blocking one of the world’s major shipping routes on March 23.

Dear Egypt: It was YOUR pilot that was responsible for the ship’s handling while in transit through your canal.

I think Evergreen just may have grounds (bg) for a counter-suit, and from where I sit a stronger likelihood of winning said lawsuit.

Eqypt is taking advantage of the situation to do a shake down and try to get some bucks.

Pilots
Suck
Extortion mafia

And they always skate

Here....”let’s grab the ship”

They always grab the vessel

I knew a captain made a living for a while “freeing” seized vessels

The vessels owner will just abandon it in lieu of the fine. Just make sure it’s not loaded with ammonium nitrate like the one in Beirut last year

Meanwhile Exxon skated on the Valdez fiasco. 7 Billion Dollars in damages?

Yeah we (all 32,677 of us) lost that one big time. Our lawyers were definitely not on top of things and weren’t so hot to begin with. The 7 billion just covered losses. Punitive damages of 9.22 times damages were cut in half, then reduced further from - in my case - $175K of barely $7K.

Ships call sign is 'H3RC', and Secret Service has code names for POTUS/VPOTUS/FLOTUS/etc with Evergreen assigned to...

Egypt should go after Hillary and the Clinton Foundation.

It is now the owners of the Ever Given that are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

I am so angry at that Egypt is holding that container mega ship hostage! That new iPhone made in China is stuck in one of those containers so I can’t flash and brag about to my likers on Facebook. (sarcasm)

For years in Texas, if one ruptures a NG pipeline, you are charged for the repair and cost and lost revenue (gas they could have sold).

The ship was under Egyptian control while transiting the canal. Egypt owes the shipping company damages.

My questions are:

How much is this ship worth?

How much is the value of the containers?

How much is the value of the materials in above mentioned containers?

Is Lloyds of London going to take a major hit?
