They had to abandon whole virus approaches for coronaviruses, because they produced highly fatal side effects when the vaccinated animals were later challenged by the disease (ADE, cytokine storm, lung damage).
So they have been searching for just the particular surface proteins (epitopes) that will stimulate immune response in a safe and effective manner. Some are known, and used in currently authorized vaccines.
Some research has focused on using computational analysis (big data mining and artificial intelligence) to sort through the options, and identify sets of epitopes that could be both safe and broadly effective against coronaviruses generally (COVID, SARS, MERS, etc.).
Walter Reed is experimenting with doing just that, but they were reported to be in the early stages.

Big Farma is creating a new variant every year, so we need a new vaccine every year.
Moderna stock is hitting new high’s every week.
Vaccine creates anti-bodies without getting exposed to real virus cells. When exposed to live virus cells from an infected person, your body will either fight it off and create anti-bodies and you will not get sick -or- you will get very sick needing isolation in a hospital. The vaccine has record of avoiding the latter.
Now that we understand how the game is played, there's no reason to confine all the fraud fun to the other side...
Just talked to a guy I know...66 years old. Had 1st Pfizer last week. Still in bed with horrible flu like symptoms. Every other word was a curse word about the shot.
My question wasn’t about the use of benefits of vaccines. It was about the use of the word “need.” Medical treatment including prevention should be a choice.
And re the covid vaccine, people should be free to learn the costs and benefits and decide.
I agree, any medical procedure should be a choice, not a mandate. Except paying taxes can never be a choice LOL.

I agree, the human immune system is a masterful creation, one of the best God bestowed upon us.
I wonder of the why also. The virus is 99% survivable, and that number does not include all those that had it and did not even know it. The true number is actually much higher.
But we seem to now want to medicate and vaccinate for everything. Got a young boy who has alot of energy (normal for young boys) well hey we got a drug for that. Suffer from a runny nose? Maybe a scratchy throat? Heck we got drugs for that.
All this thinking is not healthy. Drugging half of our adolescents, all for what? What is the real threat? A rambunctious 5 year old?
No, this road we are on leads no where good.
It is 99% survivable but how many are like my BIL who went from working 4 days a week at Lowes to the rest of his life in a nursing home? How many survived but are debilitated now?
