American Universities Have Lost Their Prestige

Nothing is stranger than the contemporary American university.

Not long ago, Americans used to idolize their universities. Indeed, in science, math, engineering, medicine and business, many of these meritocratic departments and schools remain among the top-ranked in the world.

Top-notch higher education explains much of the current scientific, technological and commercial excellence of the United States.

After World War II -- won in part due to superior American scientific research, production and logistics -- a college degree became a prerequisite for a successful career. The GI Bill enabled some 8 million returning vets to go to college. Most graduated to good jobs.

The university from the late 1940s to 1960 was a rich resource of continuing education. It introduced the world's great literature, from Homer to Tolstoy, to the American middle classes.

But today's universities and colleges bear little if any resemblance to postwar higher education. Even during the tumultuous 1960s, when campuses were plagued by radical protests and periodic violence, there was still institutionalized free speech. An empirical college curriculum mostly survived the chaos of the '60s.

But it is gone now.

Instead, imagine a place where the certification of educational excellence, the Bachelor of Arts degree, is no guarantee that a graduate can speak, write or communicate coherently or think inductively.

Imagine a place that requires applicants to submit high school grade-point averages and standardized test results but doesn't require its own graduates to pass a basic uniform competency test.

The same can be said about our government. It is filled with employees who can barely speak proper English. It has become ghetto-ized. The military is not far off.

“The same can be said about our government.”

Same can be said for the entire country. We’re now running on fumes. One little puff from China, and it’s game over.

Sad to see...but I guess too many people were turned off by Trump’s tweets to give a damn as to what would become of the country without him.

the “well-educated” really don’t buy into the BS the progressives sell.

so the progressives have decided we’re not going to have any of the “well-educated”

fortunately college experience becomes less relevant every year

I started electrical engineering school in January of 1966, at UW-Madision, then one of the top engineering schools in the nation.

Four and one-half years and three riot deployments later, I graduated with a BSEE with a penetration in History. I was fortunate to receive a pretty well-balanced education.

Today, I am ashamed to call myself an alumnus of that hotbed of political correctness and cancel culture filth.

Those institutions of higher learning indoctrination have deliberately wadded that up and threw it away. There is no other way to say it.

At this point many colleges are simply grades 12 to 16 of high school, complete with watered-down grades and social promotion.

The US legal system was once held in high esteem because of its fidelity to the law and US constitution. This provided the framework for an ethical and just society.
Now its the vanguard of corruption and tyranny. All we have now is gangsters with law degrees.

Maybe, but that is not why Trump "lost." The massive fraud this past November was decided by ballot-box stuffing and pre-determined machine algorithms. In actuality, he won in a massive landslide.

I had an engineering prof in the early 1980s who had come from there. At the time, Wisconsin was running a tourism promotion campaign with the slogan “Escape to Wisconsin!” He had one of the bumper stickers hacked/edited to read “Escape Wisconsin!” He was very glad to get to GA.

Of course, things are getting weird here, now.

Its basically checking boxes now, if you want a decent grade you don’t have time to be curious.

The top layer of the American legal profession used to be fairly conservative or at least centrist and was prestigious. Now it is full of lefties who can’t run fast enough to do pro bono work for every piece of trash plaguing the American public - terrorists in Gitmo, stupid United Nations initiatives (such as climate change garbage), illegal invaders, perpetuators of voter fraud, LGBT types suing Christians, Planned Parenthood, you name it.

There are a lot of factors involved in the decline of American ‘higher’ education. From my perspective, these are relevant:

1. Universities became addicted to federal grant money. Thus getting grants became the major criterion for success as a faculty member. Teaching has become a burden that prevents faculty from spending more time writing grants.

2. Universities, and particularly university law schools more and more became the portal into political careers. Universities have become very connected to the political ‘elite’. This has contributed significantly to the politicization of the universities, and has also markedly altered the power structures and hierarchies within universities.

3. University faculty started becoming media celebrities. This attracts the worst in potential faculty members, and selects for those who seek to see their name in lights rather than contributing to societal knowledge and truth. For example, the pathetically inept Yale psychiatry faculty member who repeatedly made remarks to the media about Trump’s mental health.

There are many other factors, of course, but these have contributed.

Any delusion about prestige of a university can be dispelled by looking at who gives the commencement speeches.

Many universities have clowns and outright failures giving the speech.

You think Biden won 80 million votes?

The left has pretty much destroyed everything in America. Historically speaking and hypothetically what I think is next after imploding the systems is to eliminate the Second Amendment and exterminate conservatives and most whites. Then the left will start purging their own.
