The Netherlands needs thousands of new homes to accommodate its growing population and it might not build them all – some may end up being printed.
As part of a program exploring how the country can create the homes it needs, Elize Lutz and Harrie Dekkers have moved into a new 94-square-metre, two-bedroom home that resembles a boulder with windows.
The curving lines of its grey concrete walls look and feel natural, but they are actually at the cutting edge of housing construction technology in the Netherlands and around the world.
They were 3D printed at a nearby factory.
"It's special. It's a form that's unusual, and when I saw it for the first time, it reminds me of something you knew when you were young," Ms Lutz said.
She will rent the house with Mr Dekkers for six months for 800 euros ($1,245) per month.

ABC in Australia is further to the left than CNN. It is controlled by the Green Party, even though is is public owned like PBS in the USA. The population growth rate of the Netherlands has been falling for about 10 years and is only about .22% at the current rate of population growth.

Utterly horrible looking. I’ve seen a number of prototypes and mockups of 3-D printed houses (typically using concrete blocks), and this one is easily the ugliest.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
This is just the early first steps — the technology has tremendous promise. Among other things, it will likely lead to a lot of innovation in building design. Who knows, you might find some of them attractive.

The Netherlands is currently growing at a relatively slow rate of 0.22% per year. This growth rate added about 37,742 people to the population from 2019 to 2020. The Netherlands has positive net migration of about 16,000 per year and the fertility rate is relatively low at 1.66 births per woman (below the population replacement rate of 2.1 births per woman).
Given this, the population growth is heavily driven by immigration. The Netherlands is receiving many asylum seekers from Syria.

You expect a journalist to be able to do math? That’s so hard, and besides, it’s beneath their exalted status as truth tellers to the Establishment power structure. Or something.
