(GREENVILLE, SC/FOX Carolina) - On June 30, South Carolina will return to its pre-pandemic unemployment program.

On Thursday, Governor Henry McMaster directed the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW) to end the state's participation in all federal unemployment benefit programs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Governor said the decision is in response to labor shortages. DEW Director Dan Ellzey said there are over 81,600 open job positions across the state. Ellzey said the agency believes reemployment is the best course of action for economic recovery.

------

"What was intended to be a short-term financial assistance for the vulnerable and displaced during the height of the pandemic has turned into a dangerous federal entitlement, incentivizing and paying workers to stay at home rather than encouraging them to return to the workplace," Governor McMaster said in the letter to DEW. "These federal entitlements pose a clear and present danger to the health of our State’s businesses and to our economy. Since the Biden administration and Congress appear to have little to no comprehension of the damage being done and no appetite to terminate the federal payments, the State of South Carolina must take action."

They’d better hope a person of color is not killed in an officer involved shooting the same day.

Maybe close stores early and send kids home from school.

We are trying to hire people.

Some in manufacturing, warehouse, field sales. I’d like to have a trusted lieutenant in IT infrastructure so I can take a few days off without paying heavily in tickets. Not happening through.

Unskilled blue-collar and commission sales.

Skilled blue-collar and white-collar work not hiring yet for those formerly in the services-related industries such as travel, tourism, events, meetings, conventions, sports, music, music, theater, cinema as this industry shutdown still or at 10% or less capacity.

IT? You mean you are one of the 0.01% of the companies NOT hiring through an Indian recruiter? Insert “Surprised Pikachu Face” here.

It is a good move. On Hilton Head, my favorite restaurant is closing on the weekend because they cannot get people to work the shifts. Those that did simply tell them they are making as much money staying home. Good old Socialism, how much proof do people need that it is POISON!

I’m guessing they pay only part-time, sub-minimum wage plus tips.

Most of those people went back to work months ago. The skilled blue-collar and white-collar workers are the ones still on unemployment.

For most, it’s a 50 to 75% pay cut in a new starter job.
