Micronesians feel hatred in Hawaii, decry police shooting

Comments on social media about a 16-year-old boy shot and killed by Honolulu police have been so hateful that a Catholic priest, who hails from the same small Pacific island as the teen's family, hesitates to repeat them.

"It is really bad and I don't want to say it as a priest," said the Rev. Romple Emwalu, parochial vicar at a parish outside Honolulu who was born in Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia. "But, like, 'Micronesians are dirt.'"

Some in the Micronesian community say the April 5 shooting of Iremamber Sykap highlights the racism they face in Hawaii, a place they expected to be more welcoming to fellow islanders.

I’ve lived in Hawaii some 21 years now. I gave up long ago trying to figure out the races and the mixes, but I have noticed when one group doesn’t want to “Assimilate” into the Hawaii Aloha “culture”. Tongans are especially disliked. perhaps it is their “screw everybody” not from Tonga attitude.
Even though Hawaii has a very mixed population. There are still “rules”. I know a man who was a Millwright at a now defunct Coal fired electricity generation facility. He was thinking of changing his last name to that of his Japanese wife, as the predominate electric provider on my island won’t hire someone with a Haole last name. You can’t prove it, but it exists.

Chuk was called Truk in WW2.

Considering the multiple 10,000s of tons of unexploded Japanese heavy munitions (Artillery & mortar shells, torpedoes, landmines, naval shells) on the bottom of the harbor at Chuk. I’d leave too. Look up “The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot” for the history of the battle that put all that stuff there.

BTW, Guamians don’t really like the Chukese either.

"BTW, Guamians don’t really like the Chukese either."

I was about to mention something like that too. When I was there, it seemed like Guamanians had a low view of those from neighboring islands in the Marianas. Just to call someone "Palau" was to imply they were naturally stupid.

It seems to be a universal: until fairly recently, almost every culture or race believed themselves to be superior to some others.

People in Hawaii don’t like the Micronesians because they do most of the crime, are welfare dependent, and a financial burden on the Hawaii taxpayer. They were invited in by George Bush.
Hawaiians ( and locals ) are racist against whites.
They are not racist against Blacks, most of whom are in the military.

Oh FFS. Hawaii is a melting pots of melted pots. There is open racism toward whites and blacks by the locals. I should know.

In Honolulu, as a tourist, I was struck by the racist graffiti in the public men’s restrooms. Lots of different races were included. I specifically remember the Japanese and the Haoles. In the mainland restrooms, there might be an occasional racist graffito, but most of the remarks and drawings are sexual, often perverse.

Most Polynesians are not remotely white. “Hapa” (mixed race) Polynesians can go either way.

Asians are about the worst bigots anywhere. I lived in Hawaii 2+ years. My coworkers were Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, Hawaiian, black and white, in that order. The Filipinos were great to work, fine folks. The other groups hated each other and everyone else. I’m a big boy, no one messed with me, but I did get cussed out in Hawaiian once.

Hawaiians are about the most racist people in the US. Them and Black Nationalists.

Among countries, everyone’s racist. And Latin Americans despise each other. Mexicans HATE Cubans. Puerto Ricans hate Columbians. Etc.

Yep, kill Haole day was a thing in 73, was in 8th grade at Niu Valley. Then we moved and went to Castle High in Kaneohe, after 2 months there my parents sent me and sis back to Ohio. Wasn’t a good deal there for us small town kids. Doubt I’ll ever go back.
