That question was posed recently by Terry Virt (former astronaut and AF Col/Pilot) to Christopher Mellon (former Deputy Asst. Sec. of Defense for Intel) in a video interview HERE (video to mark where Air Force question is asked).
Mellon's response was that people in the AF were more reluctant because the AF had a long history of declaring pilots who saw UFO's as crazy and threatening to destroy their careers.
