Or in absence of official formal public contact with the aliens, is it pretty much same as usual on Earth since the day you were born?
Still have to pay bills, still have to go to work, can’t do anything to protect against a possible invasion and can’t trust people in power not to sell us out.

Absolutely! Making friends with them, get them to lend you their memory wipers for awhile, show you how to blend I to your environment with some cool alien gown or something, learn you to levitate, etc.
We are surrounded by innumerable angels, good and bad, yet modern man vainly hopes to meet aliens which do not exist.
St Paul’s advice is more pertinent now than ever:
[11] Put you on the armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the deceits of the devil. [12] For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places. [13] Therefore take unto you the armour of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and to stand in all things perfect. [14] Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of justice, [15] And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace: Eph 6:11-15
