Colonial Pipeline Hack is an Act of War May 14, 2021
NEWT GINGRICH AUDIO CONTENT ^ | May 14, 2021 | Newt Ginrich

Last week, the Colonial Pipeline Company gave nearly $5 million to an Eastern European criminal group that hacked them. This should bother us. We should all be bothered that our government can’t protect our companies. We should all be bothered that there’s a real cyber war underway and terrible things could happen in a matter of seconds.

We should also be bothered that something that’s been done for decades without computers now cannot be done without computers.

ping

We should make it clear that we will take back the money

Only weak liberals would pay. Does anyone think for a second Trump would let this happen?

I'm thinking Newt's in over his head on this one.

1. It's not the government's job to be an energy company's cybersecurity department.

2. Having said that, I'd also suggest that the government should tie pipeline permits to some kind of performance standard related to reliability. The companies that operates these pipelines are given a lot of latitude under the law because they are deemed essential to our nation. If you have a permit to operate a pipeline and your operation gets shut down due to a computer hack like this, then the government should take possession of the pipeline and sell it to the highest bidder -- with ZERO compensation to the pipeline owner.

Put #2 in place and you'll have the most secure pipeline system the human mind can ever conceive.

My feeling is that the bulk of the onus is on our private corporations to ensure their own cybersecurity is up to par, especially when they have already been reviewed and audited by an outside firm and been told that it’s not.

Doubly so when this company’s security was reviewed by an outside firm around two or three years ago and they were clearly notified at that time that it was in horrible shape!

Why do we assume it is “Eastern European Criminal Groups?”

Because Joe Biden said so?

Who really has complete control and total surveillance of US computer and software systems?

Anyone who thinks the Russian and Chinese generals are not watching is a fool. Biden should demand the extradition of these thugs, $5M in payment and if that doesn’t work, seize $5 million in Russian assets in this country. Crime only pays when you let it pay.

“seize $5 million in Russian assets in this country.”

I like that, but make it at least 10x or a percentage. But be prepared to face “reciprocity” in a foreign country on US assets.

The Eastern European criminals are Hunter Biden’s cronies. Remember, 10% goes to the “big guy”!

On the other hand, you can think of it as a finder’s fee for a serious security flaw.

I wouldn’t be relying on government for much of anything it’s likely to FAIL. Companies should have already taken steps to secure themselves from hackers domestic and international.

Exactly!

AT THE VERY LEAST, the pipeline control system ought to be an ENTIRELY SEPARATE network, with ZERO internet connectivity.
