Secret Sharers: The Hidden Ties Between Private Spies and Journalists

Some journalists are happy to knock on the doors of strangers. I was never one of them, but Christopher Steele, the ex-British spy behind the infamous Trump dossier, left me no choice.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Mr. Steele had been hired by an investigative firm called Fusion GPS to gather dirt about Donald J. Trump and Russia. The firm’s founders, two former Wall Street Journal reporters, made it clear they would not talk to me for a book I was writing about the business of private intelligence. So on an early summer morning in 2019, I arrived at Mr. Steele’s home in Farnham, a picturesque English village.

A booming, renegade private intelligence industry is increasingly shaping (and misshaping) the news. That didn't workout very well in Gaza.

Why is this the least bit surprising? Pretty much every “reporter” for TASS, Pravda and Izvestia was KGB. The modern American media is little different.

It’s been going on for some time. The Clintons ( i think McAuliffe was also heavily invloved!)were notorious and frequent users of private detectives doing “opposition research”. “Opposition research” was what it used to be called not “private intelligence “ collection. The later of course is sexier and apt to get the desired PR outrage. Are we surprised Hellary was still doing it ? Only a fool would be! Was it going on prior to the Clintons ? I’m sure it was and I’m sure both sides do it. The Clintons raised it to a more “public art”. A career in politics particularly in DC will probably result in a lot “embarrassments “ to collect !

“A booming, renegade private intelligence industry is increasingly shaping (and misshaping) the news.”

It is time for public figures and institutions to start fighting back. Each time the press brings forth accusations based on “anonymous or unidentified sources” when the press demands a comment by the target of the accusation the automatic response should be, “I will not dignify anonymous and unverifiable accusations with a response. When the accuser comes forward publicly, on the record, and with very specific independently verifiable evidence supporting the charge, I will provide a response.”

Now it all makes sense.
The NYT, working with Hamas, McCain and probably more GOP-e fabricated this entire thing.

What evidence do we have that Steele was a genuine spy? Everyone says it, but where is the proof? Likely a clerk or a Gofer.
